Stephen Colbert Named New 'Late Show' Host, Will Succeed David Letterman!

Stephen Colbert has just been named as the new successor to David Letterman‘s The Late Show!

Stephen Colbert is one of the most inventive and respected forces on television,” Les Moonves, President and CEO, CBS Corporation, said in a statement. “David Letterman’s legacy and accomplishments are an incredible source of pride for all of us here, and today’s announcement speaks to our commitment of upholding what he established for CBS in late night.”

“Simply being a guest on David Letterman’s show has been a highlight of my career,” Stephen added. “I never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though everyone in late night follows Dave’s lead.”

“I’m thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth,” he joked!

Stephen currently hosts The Colbert Report on Comedy Central.

David recently announced that he would be retiring in 2015.

    oh no! Says:

    Does this mean he won’t be doing the Colbert Report? We need more people like him, informing Americans of the corruption that is the republican party with humor and facts. Wish he could get his Colbert on stations like ABC or CBS to reach a wider audience of uninformed voters.

    Odd choice because I think Greg Ferguson would be a better choice since his show follows Davids and he already has a following. He is a very talented comedian and has unique skits on his show.

    gonna tank…. 2 liberalpussies now fighting it out on late night ..lol..
    Ms. Obunghole should be his first guest…his signature niche comedy is way too cerebral for dumbed down ‘Merca

    Colbert is a good choice. Just shocked CBS filled Letterman’s spot in record time — his body isn’t even cold yet — Jeez!!

    Colbert is an acquired taste and many people just don’t get him, or it.

    Colbert is a genius. His Late Show will be fantastic, especially since he’s taking his entire Report staff with him. Craig Ferguson is brilliant as well but it looks like he’ll be leaving the late night game this summer. He’ll likely tour the country doing his stand-up show, and probably make more movies. I wouldn’t be surprised if CBS hired a woman to take over The Late Late Show at 12:35. Hopefully not Chelsea Handler though. I’d much rather see someone like Aisha Tyler take over the show – she’s hilarious (and already a CBS employee).

    He’s a little too white and nerdy…but I haven’t watched the show in ages anyway so it doesn’t really change much for me

    Perfect choice Says:

    Obviously this has been in the works for awhile. This would have been decided before they announced Dave’s retirement, for sure. Colbert is an acquired taste but that’s because he has a sarcastic and political approach. He will no doubt drop the politics for such a mainstream position. And as far as him being too white and nerdy? I would say that’s pretty much the status quo for late night talk show hosts i.e. David Letterman, Jay Leno, Conan. I think Conan would have been an excellent choice as well actually.

    Yeah CBS! Looking forward to Colbert!

    @KK:

    He’s in character on The Colbert Report. He will be himself on The Late Show. And his writers are great.

    @Amy Says:

    Colbert deals in parody. It remains to be seen if he can “be himself” with the same moderate success.

    Great choice for Letterman’s replacement.

    web domain registration Says:

    Stephen Colbert already has an established consistent fan base which will help the transition to CBS a lot, in adverse to someone completely new hosting the show and trying to capture an audience demographic. I think it helps too that the has a year to prepare and make a smooth transition to hosting the Late Show. It’s a good replacement imo.
