Former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor Announces Probable Alzheimer's Diagnosis

Sandra Day O’Connor, the former Supreme Court Justice who was the first woman to serve on the highest court in the US, has announced that she is suffering from dementia and likely from Alzheimer’s disease.

In a statement, the 88-year-old retired judge said she was diagnosed “some time ago” with dementia and “probably Alzheimer’s disease.”

She indicated that her condition has progressed to the point where she is “no longer able to participate in public life,” the AP reports.

Originally nominated to her post by President Ronald Reagan, Sandra Day O’Connor took her seat at the Supreme Court in 1981, and retired in 2005.

Our thoughts are with her and her loved ones.
