Mark Ruffalo Calls Out HFPA Over Lack of Diversity Following Announcement of New Plan

The HFPA is continuing to be called out after they revealed their plan for incorporating more diversity into the company.

However, the new plan isn’t what members or past Golden Globes winners like Mark Ruffalo, were looking for.

Mark, who won his first Golden Globe during the 2021 ceremony for his dual role in HBO’s I Know This Much Is True, has spoken out about their plan, and called it “discouraging”.

In his statement, via Deadline, Mark said that he “cannot feel proud or happy about being a recipient of this award” which he was just awarded.

“It’s discouraging to see the HFPA, which has gained prominence and profited handsomely from their involvement with filmmakers and actors, resist the change that is being asked of them from many of the groups that have been most disenfranchised by their culture of secrecy and exclusion,” he added. “Now is the time to step up and right the wrongs of the past. Honestly, as a recent winner of a Golden Globe, I cannot feel proud or happy about being a recipient of this award.

“Our industry is embracing the opportunity for greater equality in this beautiful moment,” Mark continued.. “It is not perfect and long overdue but it is clear what must happen and how. The Justice Movement is offering all of us, the HFPA, and every other entertainment entity, a good way forward.

“We should all follow suit. It is our audiences and our highest sense of decency that we are ultimately serving with these changes. They are both deserving.”

In March, the HFPA committed to adding at least 13 Black members by next year.

The plan that was voted on this week allows the HFPA board to bring in a CEO, a Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer and other administrative executives, as well as find a company to help set up a hotline to report conduct violations.

The vote also means the HFPA will begin to look for new members right now. However, many are still not happy, and claim the HFPA could be doing even more.
