Angelina Jolie Opens Up About Racism In America: 'A System That Protects Me Not Might Protect My Daughter'

Angelina Jolie gave a rare interview with Harper’s Bazaar, opening up about quarantining with her children during a pandemic and opening her eyes to the racial injustice that is being brought to light in America.

“I was fortunate years ago to travel with the UN to frontlines around the world and put into perspective what really matters,” the 45-year-old Oscar winner recalls, when asked about how she’s been reconsidering what is truly important.

Angelina continued, “Having six children, I am reminded daily of what is most important. But after almost two decades of international work, this pandemic and this moment in America has made me rethink the needs and suffering within my own country.”

“I am focusing both globally and domestically; they are of course linked. There are more than 70 million people who have had to flee their homes worldwide because of war and persecution – and there is racism and discrimination in America,” she shared. “A system that protects me but might not protect my daughter – or any other man, woman or child in our country based on skin color – is intolerable.”

“We need to progress beyond sympathy and good intentions to laws and policies that actually address structural racism and impunity,” Angelina adds. “Ending abuses in policing is just the start. It goes far beyond that, to all aspects of society, from our education system to our politics.”

As for what she’s been teaching her children – Pax, Maddox, Zahara, Shiloh, Vivienne and KnoxAngelina says she’s encouraging them “to listen to those who are being oppressed and never assume to know.”

Just recently, Angelina made a big donation to the NAACP for the Black Lives Matter movement.

Angelina Jolie's Movie 'The One & Only Ivan' to Premiere on Disney+ Instead of In Theaters

The upcoming movie The One and Only Ivan will be released exclusively on the streaming service Disney+ instead of in theaters as originally planned!

Angelina Jolie produced the movie and she voices one of the characters in the film, which you’ll be able to watch on August 21.

Here is the synopsis: Ivan (Sam Rockwell) is a 400-pound silverback gorilla who shares a communal habitat in a suburban shopping mall with Stella the elephant (Jolie) and Bob the dog (Danny DeVito). He has few memories of the jungle where he was captured, but when a baby elephant named Ruby (Brooklynn Prince) arrives, it touches something deep within him. Ruby is recently separated from her family in the wild, which causes him to question his life, where he comes from and where he ultimately wants to be.

Bryan Cranston stars in the film and the movie also features the voices of Helen Mirren and Chaka Khan.

“The world has changed in a heartbeat. People all over the globe have shared important, life changing experiences in ways we have not seen for a century,” said director Thea Sharrock. “In response to this, I am so happy that we can share Katherine Applegate’s delightful and original story, The One and Only Ivan with the world this August on Disney+, bringing some joy through this unique movie of true friendship, inspired by a true story.”

Another movie that was supposed to go to theaters was just released on Disney+ today.

Angelina Jolie Makes Big Donation to NAACP on Her 45th Birthday

Angelina Jolie has announced that she has made a big donation to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and she also released a statement on the work the organization is doing.

The Oscar-winning actress, who is celebrating her 45th birthday TODAY (June 4), donated $200,000 to the organization.

“Rights don’t belong to anyone group to give to another. Discrimination and impunity cannot be tolerated, explained away or justified. I hope we can come together as Americans to address the deep structural wrongs in our society,” Angelina said in a statement to Entertainment Tonight. “I stand with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund in their fight for racial equality, social justice, and their call for urgent legislative reform.”

One of Angelina‘s kids celebrated a big birthday last week and here’s what a source said about how Brad Pitt marked the day.

Brad Pitt is 'So Proud of Daughter Shiloh' As She Turns 14 This Week

A source is speaking out about Brad Pitt‘s relationship with daughter Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, who turned 14-years-old today.

The 56-year-old actor remains close to Shiloh, who he shares with ex-wife Angelina Jolie.

“Shiloh is close to both of her parents. All the kids have been looking forward to Shiloh’s birthday and plan to celebrate with a birthday cake,” the source shared with Entertainment Tonight.

They added that “Brad is so proud of Shiloh and who she has become. He loves that she always stays true to herself and is so good to her brothers and sisters.”

The source also revealed that Brad and Angelina have “been getting along so much better since the custody rules have been worked out. They have come so far.”

It was recently revealed that the reason behind Brad skipped the BAFTA Award ceremony was because one of his daughters was actually having surgery.

Angelina Jolie Pays Tribute to Late Mom Marcheline Bertrand on Mother's Day

Angelina Jolie celebrated her late mother, Marcheline Bertrand, on Mother’s Day in an op-ed for the New York Times.

She wrote, “Mother’s Day is hard for anyone who has lost their mom, but this year must be particularly so because of coronavirus. So many people have lost a parent suddenly, without being by their side, able to care for them and return their love in the way they’d always imagined.”

Angelina continued, “I lost my mother in my thirties. When I look back to that time, I can see how much her death changed me. It was not sudden, but so much shifted inside. Losing a mother’s love and warm, soft embrace is like having someone rip away a protective blanket.”

Marcheline passed away from ovarian cancer at the age of 56.

“When my father had an affair, it changed her life. It set her dream of family life ablaze. But she still loved being a mother. Her dreams of being an actor faded as she found herself, at the age of 26, raising two children with a famous ex who would cast a long shadow on her life. After she died, I found a video of her acting in a short film. She was good. It was all possible for her,” Angelina continued. “But now, with my girls growing up and being the ages I remember so well as a daughter, I am rediscovering my mother and her spirit. She was a girl who danced all night on the Sunset Strip and loved rock ‘n’ roll. She was a woman who loved, even after loss, and never lost her grace and her smile.”

She added, “I now know what it’s like to be alone and to wrap my coat around those I love. And I know the overwhelming sense of gratitude at being strong enough to keep them safe and warm. When your children come into your life, they immediately and forever come first.”

Angelina Jolie Pens Letter To Congress Urging To Increase SNAP Benefits

Angelina Jolie has written a letter to members of congress, calling on them to increase food stamp benefits program Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) during the coronavirus crisis.

“Many of the most vulnerable children in America have missed nearly 740 million meals at school, due to closure resulting from the rapid spread of coronavirus. With parents facing lost jobs and wages, many of these children are going hungry,” the -year-old actress and humanitarian wrote in the letter dated April 20 to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

She continued, “While strengthening SNAP will not alleviate all of the challenges low-income families are facing during the public health emergency, it will help ensure that fewer children go to bed hungry in our country.”

Congress has increased food assistance benefits by more than $15 billion due to the pandemic, however, Angelina and other advocates have argued that even more is needed.

Earlier, Angelina penned an op-ed about just how vulnerable children are during the crisis.

Angelina Jolie Implores Parents to Just Be Honest With Kids

Angelina Jolie is sending out a special message to parents amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

“I was not a very stable youth,” the 44-year-old actress and Special Envoy of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees shared in a guest column for Time. “In fact, I never thought I could be anyone’s mom. I remember the decision to become a parent. It wasn’t hard to love. It wasn’t hard to dedicate myself to someone and something greater than my life. What was hard was knowing that from now on I needed to be the one to make sure everything was okay. To manage it and make it work. From food to school to medical. Whatever would come. And to be patient.”

“So now, in the midst of this pandemic,” she continued. “I think of all the mothers and fathers with children at home. All hoping they can do everything right, answer all needs, and stay calm and positive… It is a lovely thing to discover that your children don’t want you perfect. They just want you honest. And doing your best.”
