Jake McDorman & Joe Dempsie Join 'The Right Stuff' Series as Part of Mercury Seven

Jake McDorman and Joe Dempsie will star in The Right Stuff!

The 32-year-old Shameless actor and the 31-year-old Game of Thrones star have both signed on for the National Geographic scripted series inspired by Tom Wolfe’s bestselling nonfiction novel, Deadline reports.

Jake and Joe will portray two of the seven astronauts who made up the famous Mercury Seven. The remaining five will be played by SuitsPatrick J. Adams, Narcos: Mexico‘s Aaron Staton, Underground‘s Michael Trotter, Escape at Dannemora‘s Micah Stock, and Castle Rock‘s James Lafferty. Leonardo DiCaprio is an executive producer.

The Right Stuff focuses on “what would become America’s first reality show, as ambitious astronauts and their families become instant celebrities in a competition that either will kill them or make them immortal in the quest to be a part of Project Mercury.”

Jake McDorman plays Alan Shepard, “one of the best test pilots in Navy history, who is furiously competitive”; Joe Dempsie plays Lt. Gordon Cooper, “the youngest of the seven who was selected to everyone’s surprise”; Patrick J. Adams plays Maj. John Glenn, “a revered test pilot and committed family man with unwavering principles”; Aaron Staton plays Wally Schirra, “a competitive pilot with a gift for pulling pranks”; Michael Trotter plays Gus Grissom, “a no-nonsense test pilot who eventually becomes the second man in space”; Micah Stock plays Deke Slayton, “a taciturn but incredibly intelligent pilot and engineer”; and James Lafferty plays Scott Carpenter, “a soulful man who was dubbed ‘The Poet’ by the other astronauts.”

Production will kick off this fall in Cocoa Beach, Fla., for a 2020 global premiere on National Geographic.

Joe Dempsie Talks Discomfort With Gendry & Arya's Relationship on 'GOT'

Joe Dempsie strikes a pose in his shoot for Esquire, online now.

Here’s what the 31-year-old Game of Thrones actor had to share with the mag:

On feeling uncomfortable filming Gendry and Arya’s sex scene: “It was strange for me having known [Maisie Williams] since she was 11 or 12 years old and being asked to play out a scene like that. That discomfort I had initially seemed to have been shared by quite a lot of people who have watched that episode, too. But I found the subsequent conversation actually really quite interesting. What that scene ended up doing was forcing people to confront their own hypocrisy in a way. I think the root cause of that unease and discomfort in a lot of viewers is because they feel like they’ve seen her grow up on screen. That’s something that happens to us all—we all start off young and then the majority of us start having sex and we’re all perfectly capable to finding that journey out for ourselves. But we still find it difficult to watch someone else take that journey, say, on a TV screen.”

On what Gendry’s legitimacy will mean for the character going forward: “I don’t think necessarily that all the trimmings that come with Lords of Storm’s End are really the kinds of things that he was after. Power and the land and the wealth that you would imagine Gendry would acquire now, that’s all kind of superfluous to him. I think the main thing that he would take from it is the legitimacy and that he’s no longer a bastard. The fact that he’s been recognized as a legitimate son of somebody—it can be as simple as that. You can imagine he’s not a particular fan of heirarchy but he can place himself somewhere within it now.”

On auditioning for the role of Jon Snow and two other characters before finally landing the role of Gendry: “I auditioned for the pilot. I had no idea what Game of Thrones was. Didn’t get it. Kind of forgot about it…Nobody knew it was going to become the biggest TV show on the planet at that point. It was just another audition…[I] was convinced that they must just think I’m a terrible actor. Then Gendry came along and again I went along to the audition and I think it was three auditions I had…And I was fairly convinced it was the worst audition I’ve ever given.”

Game of Thrones' Joe Dempsie (aka Gendry) Poses for Hot New Photos in 'Essential Homme'

Joe Dempsie looks so handsome while posing for a shoot featured in the latest issue of Essential Homme.

Here is what the 31-year-old actor had to share with the mag:

On a three-season break from the show: “I just sat around watching reruns of seasons 1 and 2, crying. [But], I am kind of realistic about all these things, and I feel like I’ve been in this business long enough now to understand how it works. I know that it’s a massive undertaking for David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] to try and weave all these various narrative strands together to be coherent, compelling, and satisfying.”

On promoting his other show Deep State right now too: “[It’s] good for me that I get to talk about these two things at the same time, and they’re two very different projects.”

On being recognized for Skins: “When Skins came out in the UK, it was bonkers. It was everywhere, and it was much bigger than everyone thought it was going to be. [But even today], I get 16, 17, 18-year-old’s coming over and saying, ‘Mate, were you on Skins?’ And I’m thinking, ‘What? You would have been… 8 when it came out!’”
