Nico Tortorella Says Ashton Kutcher Yelled at Them for Drug Use

Nico Tortorella is opening up about past drug use in their new book Space Between.

In the memoir, the 31-year-old Younger star – who identifies as a “queer, non-binary, bisexual” (and prefers the pronouns “they” and “them”) – recalled an embarrassing encounter with Ashton Kutcher, who allegedly yelled at them for using drugs at a party.

“As a queer person, unfortunately the way that we usually find each other is in bars,” Nico shared with People. “It really lends to the fostering of addiction and alcohol and drug issues. I obviously went down that path quite a few times in my life. Only when I was really able to let go of that crutch was I able to really find myself.”

In Space Between, Nico says they were in the midst of a drug- and alcohol-fueled bender when Ashton intervened. At only 21, Nico was starring in the 2009 series The Beautiful Life, which Ashton was an executive producer on.

Nico recalled that they had just gone to the bathroom to do cocaine before approaching Ashton for career advice.

“Don’t ever put anything up your nose,” Nico recalls Ashton saying to them.

“I’d literally just come out of the bathroom from doing a handful of key bumps,” Nico wrote. “Ashton’s a smart dude, and he very quickly realized I was high. He got in my face and started yelling at me, telling me I was flushing my entire career down my nose in front of everyone, including Demi Moore and Bruce Willis.”

“In my mind I was hyper-calm and in control, telling him this wasn’t the place to have an argument like this,” Nico continued, “when in actuality my jaw was probably doing the Macarena as I was blaming everyone else.”

The following day, Nico said they regretted the situation and worried they would get fired from the show so decided to send an apology to Ashton.

“Life is not a dress rehearsal, Nico.” Ashton allegedly wrote back. “You either show up, or you’re out.”

Since then, Nico has been living a sober life.

Nico Tortorella‘s book Space Between is out now.

The new Walking Dead spinoff will “focus on the first generation to come of age in the apocalypse as we know it. Some will become heroes. Some will become villains. In the end, all of them will be changed forever.”

Also starring in the series are Annet Mahendru, Aliyah Royale, Alexa Mansour, Nicolas Cantu, and Hal Cumpston.
