'Licorice Pizza' Director Paul Thomas Anderson Responds to Backlash for Scenes with Fake Asian Accent

Paul Thomas Anderson, the director of the Oscar-nominated movie Licorice Pizza, is finally responding to the backlash the film received for scenes in which an actor uses a fake Asian accent.

In the movie, Pitch Perfect actor John Michael Higgins plays a restauranteur who owns an establishment with his Japanese wife. He speaks to her with a fake Asian accent that has been called out as racist. The character appears a second time, this time with a second Japanese woman and he repeats the fake accent with her.

Anderson basically said in a new interview that he doesn’t understand the backlash.

'Licorice Pizza' Movie Faces Backlash for Scenes with Fake Asian Accent

The new movie Licorice Pizza is facing backlash for scenes in which a white male character speaks with an offensive fake Asian accent.

The film was written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, the eight-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind movies like Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood, The Master, Inherent Vice, and Phantom Thread.

Licorice Pizza is the story of Alana Kane (Alana Haim) and Gary Valentine (Cooper Hoffman) growing up, running around and falling in love in the San Fernando Valley, 1973. The film tracks the treacherous navigation of first love.

Philip Seymour Hoffman's Son Cooper Cast as Lead in Paul Thomas Anderson Movie

Philip Seymour Hoffman‘s son Cooper Hoffman will be making his acting debut!

The 17-year-old son of the late Oscar winner has been cast as the lead in the upcoming movie from director Paul Thomas Anderson, THR reports.

As of right now, very little is known about the movie except that it is set in LA’s San Fernando Valley in the 1970s and centers on a high school student who is also a child actor.

Cooper joins Bradley Cooper, singer-songwriter Alana Haim, and Bennie Safdie in the movie.

Over the weekend, Bradley was spotted covered in fake blood while filming a scene for the untitled movie.

Paul and Philip were longtime collaborators, working together on Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Punch Drunk Love, Magnolia, and The Master.

Cooper‘s dad Philip died in 2014 of an accidental drug overdose.

Haim Drops 'The Steps' From 'Women In Music Pt. III' - Read Lyrics & Watch the Video!

Haim has released their new song “The Steps!”

The band – sisters Este Haim, Danielle Haim, and Alana Haim – unveiled the visual on Tuesday (March 3).

They also announced that their third studio album, Women In Music Pt. III, will be released on April 24.

Paul Thomas Anderson directed the video along with Danielle.

On the album title, Danielle said, “The name came to me in a dream and I woke up laughing so I told my sisters.”

Alana added, “I liked it because we are literally women in music and we always get written about that way, so it seemed cool to make it our own and control the narrative. It made me think about some of our experiences more.”

Este shared, “I just thought it was funny, plus the initials are WIMP3. Wimp is a hilarious word.”
