Taylor Swift Defends Hayley Kiyoko: 'I've Never Encountered Homophobia & She Has'

Taylor Swift is speaking out to defend singer Hayley Kiyoko, who received some backlash after bringing up Taylor in an interview.

Hayley is openly gay and has featured female love interests in her music videos, even when music executives don’t want her to.

“I’ve had several music industry execs say ‘You’re doing another music video about girls?’ I literally looked at them and was like, um, yeah … Taylor Swift sings about men in every single song and video, and no one complains that she’s unoriginal,” Hayley said in an interview with Refinery29.

Some of Taylor‘s fans took this as a dig against their idol, but she spoke out on Tumblr to respond to the quote.

“We should applaud artists who are brave enough to tell their honest romantic narrative through their art, and the fact is that I’ve never encountered homophobia and she has,” Taylor said. “It’s her right to call out anyone who has double standards about gay vs straight love interests.”
