Emily Blunt Reveals How She Overcame Her Childhood Stutter

Emily Blunt is on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar UK‘s January 2018 issue.

Here’s what the Mary Poppins Returns star had to share with the mag…

On overcoming her childhood stutter: “Because I couldn’t speak fluently, I watched and listened…There’s always been a natural desire to walk in the shoes of others… It started quite young, because it was the only tool I had to speak properly. I was that kid, upstairs in my room, trying out stuff in the mirror. But I’d never tell anyone about it. It was always very private.”

On living in Brooklyn: “There’s a multicultural, villagey feel, we don’t have a car, we walk everywhere and people are cool, they leave us alone.”

On preparing for the role of Mary Poppins: “Even though I’d seen the film as a child, I decided not to watch it when prepping. She was so clear to me from reading that I decided not to be intimidated by the iconic Julie Andrews in the iconic role, and just approached it as I would any other part.”

The January issue of Harper’s Bazaar is on sale from December 4.
