A timeline of the events that happened just before Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan Markle announced their intentions to step back as senior members of the royal family has been revealed.

This all is coming from royal sources, so none has been verified by the Palace. But, here’s what they are saying happened in the weeks leading up to the decision.

• First, Prince Harry reportedly contacted his dad, Prince Charles, just before Christmas and told him he and his wife wanted to spend more time in North America. Prince Charles reportedly told him a plan needed to be in place.
• Prince Harry reportedly did send a proposal about their future roles after the New Year, but was told they’d need to think this over to form a plan over the funding and other complex issues.
• Prince Harry then apparently asked for a meeting with the Queen after they were back from their break in Canada, and she agreed but reportedly did not want to discuss anything pertaining to this matter until he had discussed it with Prince Charles.
