Emily VanCamp Looks Back on Playing Nic Nevin on 'The Resident' Following Her Heartbreaking End

Emily VanCamp is opening up about her exit from The Resident.

After announcing that she was leaving the series at the end of August, fans learned how Emily‘s character exited the series after watching this evening’s episode.

Now, in a interview with Deadline, she’s opened up about her decision.

Emily acknowledged that leaving The Resident wasn’t an easy decision.

“I spent so many years on network television, but then suddenly priorities shifted,” she shared with the site of her leaving. “I think there comes a moment in every woman’s life — in every person’s life — where it becomes less about work and more about family, and that’s what happened while I was making the show.”

Emily added, “Doing that many episodes in a different city and then you add COVID to that, most of us couldn’t see our families for almost a year. It really solidified for me that family is where my heart is at the moment.”

She went on, saying that “it’s such a bittersweet moment for me. I loved doing The Resident so much for the four years I was on it. Oftentimes you hear about someone exiting a show because something bad had happened or there was some bad blood. But in this case, it’s the exact opposite.”

“There’s nothing but love and respect between all of us and this decision was not an easy one for anybody. But it was the right one for me, personally. I’m grateful that I was met with understanding and compassion.”

As for her character, Emily says that “Nic had a very beautiful life. And as tragic as it is the way she goes, her ending is very fitting and representative of the person that she was…I’m glad they went that route with the character, she leaves quite the legacy. She’s left a major stamp on my heart. I loved playing Nic and I’m grateful for everything she’s taught me.”

Emily and husband Josh Bowman welcomed their daughter in September.
