These Royals Gave Up Everything - Including A Title - For Love!

King Edward VIII & Wallis Simpson

King Edward VIII

King Edward VIII is perhaps the most famous royal who abdicated for love, which happened in 1936.

After only months on the throne, he left his position to marry Wallis Simpson, who was an American who had divorced her first husband and was seeking a divorce from her second.

The prime ministers of the United Kingdom and the Dominions at the time opposed the marriage, arguing a divorced woman with two living ex-husbands was politically and socially unacceptable.

“I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge my duties as king as I would wish to do without the help and support of the woman I love,” his official announcement read.

The couple, after abdication, were known as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.
