Bobby Bones Not Returning To 'American Idol' As In-House Mentor

American Idol will be down one main cast member when it returns for the 20th season on ABC.

Bobby Bones has announced to fans that he will not be returning to the reality competition series, and shared the big reason why.

Bobby took to his Instagram Stories this week and revealed to fans that he was actually filming a new show in Costa Rica, before telling everyone that he wouldn’t be back for Idol‘s season 20.

After a fan asked when they will know why he was working in the South American country, he replied that he’d tell them “as soon as I can…The network hasn’t even announced the show yet. So I’m going to chill for a bit. But it’s a really good show.”

He then announced that he wouldn’t be back for more Idol as the in-house mentor.

“Some of you noticed I’m not in the Idol promos this season,” he wrote. “My contract with my new network won’t let me do another show right now.”

But there’s no bad blood at all: “Love Idol, BTW. Was a great 4 years.”

Judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, as well as host Ryan Seacrest will be back for season 20, set to premiere on February 27.
