The latest episode of American Idol featured the Top 12 contestants performing songs that reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, including one by judge Katy Perry.

There have been 22 seasons of American Idol so far (including the one airing right now on ABC) and throughout those two decades, there have been 14 different people who have sat behind the judges table.
The longest reign in the judges chair is 12 seasons while three different judges only appeared on one season. We bet you totally forgot that some of these people were even on the show!
Another fun fact is that only three seasons of American Idol have had four judges while the other 17 seasons all had just three judges.
One thing that has remained constant throughout all 22 seasons is that Ryan Seacrest has been the host every single year. The first season he co-hosted with Brian Dunkleman and then he was a solo host for the remaining 19 seasons.

Lionel Richie is reacting to Katy Perry‘s American Idol exit announcement.
Earlier this week, the 39-year-old “Dark Horse” singer announced that she will be leaving the ABC singing competition after season 22, which premieres this weekend.
While appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Thursday (Feb. 15), Lionel, 74, reacted to Katy‘s announcement, which he says he didn’t know about ahead of time.

The fan-favorite reality TV singing competition series will be back on Sunday, February 18 at 8 p.m. ET, and the three judges have been officially announced, via ABC.

Lionel Richie is sharing his thoughts on daughter Sofia Richie‘s pregnancy and he’s opening up about becoming a grandfather to her daughter.
The 25-year-old model and entrepreneur confirmed last week that she’s expecting a baby girl with husband Elliot Grainge.
“You know what? I am pumped up,” Lionel told People. “I am now going to spoil yet another child in the world … And I am not quite sure what the child will do to me, but I’m hoping that the child gives the parents a bit of a run, because every parent wants to get even as to what you did to me.”
“I’m in a position right now where I’m going to love this child to death, spoil her to death,” he added. “And on very special occasions give the child back so the parents can actually raise this child.”
Lionel explained why he won’t let the child call him grandpa.
“I’m Pop-pop,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “We don’t get the ‘grandpa,’ yeah, that’s a little deep. Pop-pop is where we’re going.”
Lionel thinks that Sofia is going to be a great mom.
“She’s going to be fantastic,” he told People. “These are two loving parents, and I don’t think they really know what’s coming because every kid is different. So no matter what advice I give them, there’s no manual for this. They’ll figure it out.”
