Josh Groban & Annaleigh Ashford Confirmed to Star in 'Sweeney Todd' Broadway Revival

Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford are heading to Broadway.

On Tuesday (September 6), Deadline confirmed that the two stars would be leading a new production of the Stephen Sondheim-Hugh Wheeler classic musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

It had previously been reported that Josh and Annaleigh had joined the cast after Ticketmaster leaked the news on Monday.

Josh took to Twitter to share the official announcement with his fans, posting a video confirming his casting. “Attend The Tale. 02/26/23,” he captioned the clip, tagging the show’s Twitter account.

Performances of Sweeney Todd are set to begin on February 26, 2023, at Broadway’s Lunt-Fontanne Theatre with an official opening night of March 26, 2023. Thomas Kail is set to direct, with additional casting to be announced at a later date.

This will be mark the first time Sweeney Todd will be performed in the original production since 1980. The initial production was the winner of eight 1980 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book, Best Score, and Best Direction for Hal Prince.
