Matt Damon Reveals How Much He Lost Out on by Rejecting 'Avatar' Offer & Director James Cameron Responds

Matt Damon is mourning his missing millions.

The 52-year-old actor revealed back in 2021 during Cannes Film Festival that James Cameron pursued him to star in 2009′s Avatar, and offered him a deal in which he’d get 10% of the movie’s profits.

As a result, the movie – which grossed over $2 billion worldwide and became the highest-grossing movie ever – would have earned the actor approximately $250 million.

“I will go down in history. You will never meet an actor who turned down more money,” he said at the time.

Now, James Cameron is speaking out about it.

“He’s beating himself up over this,” he said to BBC Radio.

“And I really think you know, ‘Matt you’re kind of like one of the biggest movie stars in the world, get over it.’ But he had to do another Bourne film which was on his runway and there was nothing we could do about that. So he had to regretfully decline.”

When asked whether Matt should get a cameo in a future Avatar movie, he said: “Must do it. We have to do it so the world is in equilibrium again. But he doesn’t get 10%, f-ck that.”
