Ellen Pompeo, who has appeared in every season of the show dating all the way back to the first episode of season one, will be stepping away as a full time cast member.

Her character, Meredith Grey, is going to be moving to Boston, where she will have a new job working on Alzheimer’s research and her daughter will be attending a new school. A promo revealed that the next episode, which airs on February 23, will feature Meredith Grey’s farewell.

Ellen has promised she will be back to visit, so it doesn’t look like a permanent goodbye at this time.
