The original plot centered on getting an interview with Gwen Stefani…

“The script they had at the time was about a girl who wrote for the school paper, who wanted to get an interview with Gwen Stefani at the House of Blues, and her mother was a psychiatrist,” director Mark Waters recalled about an early draft of the movie. “The first thing I said was like, ‘Why are you making this version of the movie? You have a nerd daughter and a nerd mom, and they’re basically switching places and age in nerdom. You gotta have the rebel daughter and the straight-laced mom, and then it’s gonna be interesting.’ I pitched the whole thing, literally what the movie became. … I left thinking, ‘Well, I’m never gonna hear from them again.’”

Obviously that wasn’t the case, though the plot obviously changed quite a bit!
