Alex Trebek's Wife Jean Shares Toughest Part of His Cancer Battle

Alex Trebek‘s wife of almost 30 years, Jean Currivan Trebek, is spilling on the hardest part of her husband’s cancer battle.

The 79-year-old Jeopardy! host has been fighting stage 4 pancreatic cancer for almost a year.

“For me, it’s when I see him in pain and I can’t help him,” Jean said in a recent interview with Good Morning America‘s Michael Strahan. “When he doesn’t eat right. When he has too much diet soda.”

When asked if she’s ever suggested that Alex take a break from the game show, Jean Currivan Trebek replied, “Yes, to my girlfriends, yes. But I know its what feeds him. He loves doing Jeopardy. He has his own family over there. They are such a close-knit, beautiful group of people. I think that gives him a lot of support. A sense of purpose and that he’s just not in bed and can be productive.”

Alex Trebek chimed in about his wife, “It’s always tough for the caretakers because she has to deal with her worrying for my well-being and also dealing with… I’m not always the most pleasant person to be around when I am experiencing severe pain and depression, and she has to tread lightly around me.

Alex Trebek has been battling pancreatic cancer and he is opening up about his health in a new interview.

The longtime Jeopardy host, 79, chatted with Michael Strahan to talk about how the battle with cancer has affected his life.

“I don’t mind getting choked up. My oncologist told me one of the symptoms, if you will, of pancreatic cancer is that you get these moments of depression, sadness,” he said.

Alex says that he went to see the doctor after he experienced severe stomach pain.

“I knew as soon as the doctor came back and mentioned the pancreas. I said, ‘Uh-oh, it’s going to be cancer,’” he added.

Alex Trebek Raises Awareness About Pancreatic Cancer in PSA: 'I Wish I Had Known Sooner' (Video)

Alex Trebek is getting candid about his battle with pancreatic cancer in honor of World Pancreatic Cancer Day.

The 79-year-old Jeopardy! host opened up in a PSA posted to the World Pancreatic Cancer Coalition’s YouTube channel on Wednesday (October 30).

In the 60-second clip, he discusses the risk factors and symptoms of pancreatic cancer.

“In nearly every country, pancreatic cancer is the only major cancer with a five-year survival rate in the single digits,” Alex says. “Now, in order to help patients fight and survive this disease, more attention and awareness are needed.”

“I wished I had known sooner that the persistent stomach pain I experienced prior to my diagnosis was a symptom of pancreatic cancer,” he added.

Alex first revealed his stage 4 pancreatic cancer diagnosis in March.

World Pancreatic Cancer Day is on November 21.

Jeopardy's Alex Trebek Says His Skills Are Diminishing Due to Pancreatic Cancer

Alex Trebek is opening up further about his fight with stage four pancreatic cancer.

The 79-year-old Jeopardy! host was able to stop chemotherapy back in May due to excellent shrinkage of his tumors, but months later, his numbers went up and he’s back doing chemotherapy.

He was asked in a recent interview if he would have to stop hosting Jeopardy! at some point soon and he responded, “I will keep doing it (the show) as long as my skills do not diminish, and they have started to diminish.” Alex added he’s beginning to get sores in his mouth that are affecting his ability to enunciate words.

“The thought of the pancreatic cancer does not frighten me,” he added. “I’m 79 years old. So, hey, I’ve lived a good life, a full life, and I’m nearing the end of that life. I know that.”

“I’m hanging in,” he added. “So we’re back on the chemo and we’ll see if the numbers go down. And if they do… they can’t keep doing it forever of course. They’ll have to find a new protocol or whatever to administer. We’ll play it by ear and keep chugging along until we either win or lose.”

Alex Trebek Begins Chemotherapy Again After His Numbers Go 'Sky High'

Alex Trebek is revealing that he has been forced to undergo another round of chemotherapy after his numbers went “sky high.”

“I was doing so well. And my numbers went down to the equivalent of a normal human being who does not have pancreatic cancer. So we were all very optimistic. And they said, ‘Good, we’re gonna stop chemo, we’ll start you on immunotherapy,’” Alex said during an appearance on Good Morning America on Tuesday (September 17).

He continued about what happened next, “I lost about 12 pounds in a week. And my numbers went sky high, much higher than they were when I was first diagnosed. So, the doctors have decided that I have to undergo chemo again and that’s what I’m doing.”

Alex added that his cancer has caused him “excruciating pain” and “fatigue.”

Back in March, Alex announced that he had stage four pancreatic cancer. In August, he announced that he had finished his chemotherapy and would be returning to work on Jeopardy.
