Carlos Alcaraz's Wimbledon Win Scores Him A Second Grand Slam

Carlos Alcaraz lifts the Men’s Singles Finals Trophy following his victory against Novak Djokovic at the 2023 Wimbledon Tennis Championships on Sunday (July 16) in London, England.

“You’ve won [the Queens grass tennis tournament],” an interviewer said of Spain’s Carlos, 20, after the match. “Now you won Wimbledon. You seem to be developing a very strong relationship with grass.”

“I have fallen in love with grass right now,” he laughed.

Carlos only had the best of things to say about Serbia’s Novak: “You inspire me a lot. I started playing tennis, watching you, since I was born, you already were winning tournaments. It’s amazing. You said 36 is the new 26 and you made that happen.”

Princess Catherine presented Carlos with his trophy after his win.

King Felipe VI of Spain was in the crowd to support Carlos.

“I played in front of you just twice,” Carlos said of his lucky charm. “Twice that I won, I hope you are coming more. (laughs)”

Carlos dethroned Novak in a five-hour match that went to five sets, 1-6, 7-6 (6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.

Carlos is the first player to win Wimbledon in 20 years outside of Novak, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Andy Murray. He’s also the youngest man to win the title since 1986 when Boris Becker won at age 17.

Carlos Alcaraz Dethrones Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon Tennis Finals

Carlos Alcaraz is #1 – and here to stay!

The 20-year-old Spaniard defeated Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, 36, on Sunday (July 16) during a historic men’s finals tennis match at London’s The Championships, commonly known simply as Wimbledon.

The five-hour match went to five sets, 1-6, 7-6 (6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.

Carlos ended Novak’s undefeated 15-consecutive tiebreak streak during the second set and even won an epic 13-deuce 27-minute game in the third set.

This is a huge turn in tennis history as Novak is a seven-time Wimbledon champion, was on a 34 match winning streak, and hasn’t lost a match on Centre Court since the 2013 final against Andy Murray. Novak was also gunning for another win to add to his 23 Grand Slam men’s singles titles, the most major titles won by a male player in history.

Carlos, who won his first grand slam title at the 2022 US Open, lost to Novak in the French Open semifinals last month after cramping because of nerves. Sweet revenge!

In the star-studded stands to watch this historic moment in tennis history were Brad Pitt, Ariana Grande, Emma Watson, Andrew Garfield, Nick Jonas, Hugh Jackman, Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, Lily James, Idris Elba, Ian McKellen, Tessa Thompson, Imogen Poots, Jonathan Bailey, Tom Hiddleston, Zawe Ashton, Daniel Bruhl, Prince William, Princess Catherine, Prince George, and Princess Charlotte.

World #1 Carlos Alcaraz & Novak Djokovic Face Off in Wimbledon Tennis Final this Sunday

New gen vs. old gen!

World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, 20, will once again play Novak Djokovic, 36, this Sunday (July 16) during the men’s finals at the Wimbledon tennis tournament in London, England.

The pair will meet for the fourth time in their careers and if successful, this would be Carlos‘s second Grand Slam win, whereas Novak is a 23-time champion.

“Everyone knows the legend he is. He is going to be really difficult. I will fight. That’s myself. I will believe in myself, I will believe I can beat him here,” said Carlos, who hails from Spain. “I saw that he is unbeaten here (at Wimbledon) since 2013 on this court. It’s going to be challenging, but I am ready for this. It will be special playing against Novak, but it is a final. There’s no time to be afraid, no time to be tired. I will go for it, and let’s see what happens.”

Novak, from Serbia, added, “We had a very good match (at the French Open last month) until he started struggling physically in Paris. I think we really took the level of tennis very high. I think was great for the audience and great for us players to be part of that. Obviously completely different conditions here. Grass is massively different from clay. Yes, I do have more experience playing in many more Grand Slam or Wimbledon finals than him. Still he’s in great shape. He’s very motivated. He’s young. He’s hungry. I’m hungry, too, so let’s have a feast (smiles).”

During the quarterfinals, both opponents won in three straight sets – Novak beat out Italy’s Jannik Sinner, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (4), while Carlos easily finished off Daniil Medvedev, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3.

Carlos is now the third men’s player this century to make it to multiple Men’s Singles finals at Grand Slams before turning 21, after Rafael Nadal (4) and Novak (2).

Tune in to watch Carlos and Novak face off at the Wimbledon finals this Sunday at 8am ET/5am PT!
