Novak Djokovic Will Play in Australia Open, Despite Not Revealing If He's Vaccinated Against COVID-19 - Here's How

Novak Djokovic has announced today that he will be playing in the Australia Open.

The Open kicks off on Monday, January 17, but the issue has arisen that all participants must either be vaccinated or be exempt from vaccination status.

“No-one can play the Australian Open unless they are vaccinated — either a double-dose of the required vaccines, or a single dose of Johnson & Johnson, which is an approved vaccine,” Craig Tiley, the chief executive of Tennis Australia, which hosts the tournament, said in a statement. “The only condition outside of being vaccinated that you could compete is if you received a medically approved exemption from Australian authorities.”

Novak Djokovic Loses Final Match of Tokyo Olympics, Smashes His Racket After Major Upset

Novak Djokovic had a shocking upset at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

The 34-year-old tennis player, who is currently ranked number one in the world, failed to win a medal during his final match at the Olympic games on Saturday (July 31) in Tokyo, Japan.

Novak played in the bronze medal singles match against Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta and lost the match. He then withdrew from the bronze medal mixed doubles match, citing an injury to his left shoulder.

Australia’s Ash Barty and John Peers have automatically won the bronze medal because of Novak‘s withdrawal and his partner Nina Stojanović is missing out on her chance to play for the medal.

During his singles match, Novak lost his temper and smashed two tennis rackets. One of them he threw into the stands and the other one he smashed into the net stanchion.

Novak, who is ranked No. 1 in the world, beat Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the men’s singles finals at Rod Laver Arena.

This is also his ninth Australian Open title and 18th Grand Slam title. He is now just behind the all-time record of 20 Grand Slam wins held by Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

“Everyone has their own journey and their own way of making history, and they’ve made history already. I’m trying to build that and develop that myself in a very unique authentic way that is suitable to me. Whether I think about winning more slams and breaking records, of course I do. Most of my attention and energy from this day forward until I retire from tennis is going to be directed in majors and trying to win more major trophies,” he said after the game.

He also made headlines for doing something in a fit of rage days before.
