Daniel Radcliffe: 'Harry Potter' Was Snubbed by Oscars

Daniel Radcliffe suits up for the premiere of The Woman in Black on Tuesday (February 7) in Paris, France.

The 22-year-old English actor recently sounded off on why he thinks Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 was not recognized by the Academy outside of the technical categories for this year’s Oscars.

“I don’t think the Oscars like commercial films or kids’ films, unless they’re directed by Martin Scorsese. I was watching Hugo the other day and going, ‘Why is this nominated and we’re not?’ I was slightly miffed,” he told the Radio Times (via The Guardian).

“There’s a certain amount of snobbery,” Daniel added. “It’s kind of disheartening. I never thought I’d care. But it would’ve been nice to have some recognition, just for the hours put in.”

He is certainly right about that.

  • zey

    he has a point ..

  • Cat

I love Dan but really, boohoo.
The entire movie is basically CGI.
    Maybe nomination for special effects.
He’s a gazillionaire bec of the films, that should be enough.
It’s not like he starred in some high powered indie piece.
I doubt Twlight expects to be nominated after it concludes and if they do they are retarded.

  • leanne

    I totally agree.

And can I say I love that Dan continues to speak honestly even though he knows everything he says is going to end up on the internet?? Im sure if I were him I would have stopped giving interviews about anything other than my next movie.

  • Martha

I totally agree with him. I think the Oscar’s, SAG’s and BAFTA’s are HUGE snob fests. I think he is being careful in not calling them out too much, but it is what is is.

Plus, sometimes they’re more about the hype and actor/actress/film can receive rather than actual talent.

  • mkhay

So true. How can be one of the biggest movies in history not have been recognized even a little?

  • lala

    he’s actually right

  • kate

what is he talking about the oscars don’t like commercial films?
the descendants, moneyball, the help, war horse, extremely loud and incredibly close……all of these films are super commercial!
The only reason Daniel radcliffe feels entitled to an oscar nom for harry potter is because of its popularity! sure they’re super popular and enjoyable films but that doesn’t mean that the scripts are any good, or that the acting is good or that the directing is good! they’re popular films but they’re not very good films! the seventh film didn’t deserve an oscar nom just because its the last harry potter film! that’s just ridiculous!

  • kate

@Cat: could not agree more!he should get over himself and get a real acting job!

  • Lisa

    Sooooooooooooo R I G H T !

  • Lila

If I were him I wouldn’t worry about it. The fact that Brad Pitt is nominated for an Oscar really shows you what a crock of poo the Oscars actually are. How much do you want to bet that next year Twilight is going to get the Oscar nod??? The Harry Potter movies are terrific, and I hope that the entire cast recognizes that the Oscars are just another excuse for the A-list celebrities to get dressed up and congratulate themselves on another year full of doing absolutely nothing of substance .

  • fruity

All of you who are saying HP doesn’t deserve it and is shit or whatever. Seriously SHUT THE F*** UP. Don’t come here to comment crap about if you have bad stuff to say just SHUT UP and keep it to yourself. OK. WTF is everybody’s problem. DAN is giving his own opinion why the hell do you NON-HP fans have problem u twilight shit fans….watch way too much of that crap your brains will act like this. MESSED UP BRAINS.

  • Kirsten

He took the words right out of my mouth. 8 brilliant movies and no recognition.

  • Blair

@Kate: Why should he ‘get over himself’ he has very clearly said that he doesn’t at ALL think he deserves an oscar… he’s talking about the MOVIE as a whole and also individual performances (e.g. Alan Rickman)

  • Ashley

He’s right. Harry Potter is amazing and it’s never gotten one bit of recognition in the more formal awards! I’ve seen Hugo and it was nothing compared to the Harry Potter films..

  • Taylor

It is not an award for the hours put in…..the film wasn’t that great.

It is truly bad form to complain and to dish another’s film because you feel slighted. I think he should have kept his mouth shut.

  • juliana

I understand the harry potter is not indicated. ryan gosling is not nominated for anything????? I do not understand it

  • Sue Denim

    He is right.
And before people go on about ~quality. Consider the fact that TRANSFORMERS AND PUSS IN BOOTS AND JONAH HILL were nominated this year.
Nominations clearly have little to do with the films themselves.
So yeah, he’s right but sadly Daniel just got himself blacklisted : /

  • lizz

    You tell em Daniel!!!!

  • jo

He’s right. The Oscars need to start seeing that blockbuster too can be art. The Dark Knight was snubbed at the Oscars in 2008 and it was the highest rated movie of the year with a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. Same for Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings.

  • ozzie

Academy awards are all snobbery and pretentious Hollywood politics. Tom hanks could film himself brushing his teeth on his iphone and he would win. Prime example is last year Toy Story 3: The Search for More Money beat out How To Train Your Dragon as best animated film which is just ridiculous.

We have spectacular performances in film snubbed year after year by the academy.

Last week in the movie Chronicle Dane DeHaan gave one of the best performances I have seen in a Hollywood movie in a long time and because the movie doesn’t have Tom Hanks, Spielberg, or Scorsese attached to it it will be ignored because it’s science fiction.

so damn should get some recognition..i think the juries prefer the current released films to be nominated.moreover, great action adventure films have always been neglected after the lord of the rings biggest oscar’s disappoinment is the dark knight and inception have lost disrespectfully haha

@kate how can you say HP aint no good?the last HP gets 8,5 points at metacritic, 96 at rotten tomatoes.3,5/5 by roget ebert.isnt that very good enough for a movie?? research please :)

  • ariela

uhh…AGREED!!!!!! 8 films- not one oscar?
best acting i’ve ever seen…they need to at least be nominated!

  • youwish

@kate: OKAY, coming from a person who probably acts WORSE. or can’t even act at all.

  • Jennica Panettiere

I dont like Daniel on a usual basis, but I have to agree with him.

There are 9 nominations for Best Picture this year and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (which had some very HORRIBLE reviews) scored one but HPDHP2 did not even get one to make up 10. They made up this new rule where only nominees with 5% in #1 or #2 votes can be nominated. How stupid is that?

  • Martha

    @Sue Denim:

OMG, thank you for pointing that out! May I add, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close was nominated for a best picture Oscar even though it only got 45% on Rotten Tomatoes, the brilliant film A Dangerous Method was ignored, so were its stars Michael Fassbender, Keira Knightley and Viggo Mortensen. Michael Fassbender was twice snubbed for his work in Shame and a Dangerous Method…I could go on and on, but you get my point.

Nominating Transformers, and Jonah Hill is the height of ridiculous and shows that the Oscars have become about politics and hype.

  • LaCroix

Well said Daniel .. HP should have been recognized for something it stands apart all the other little movies nowadays that are box office hits.. it really was/is a beautiful story. With great actors!

  • Me

I’m gonna have to agree. The Oscars always snub the big budget films. I know LOTR won, but the Oscars still snubbed the first two films.

  • Cari

Alan Rickman certainly should have been nominated for best supporting actor. That man played Snape brilliantly. There were a lot of really good solid performances in HPDH2 and it is hard to believe out of all of them Rickman got no recognition.

  • Haters Suck!

im with dan too. Quite frankly i stopped paying attention to the oscars a long time ago. They just dont appeal to me. Its all bull and politics and in some cases i truly believe who the highest bidder is. Don’t worry about it dan an oscar doesn’t make a movie. The fans know you and the harry potter movies kicked ass.

  • Jan

Say what you will about the movies not being all that great or whatever but no one can deny the fact that Alan Rickman KILLED it as Snape, throughout the entire series and especially in the last one! If anything he truly deserves it. Forget about the movie and any of the main actors being nominated but Alan Rickman seriously needs to be recognized for his phenomenal work.

  • Jenna

Oh boy, he is soooo right there!! I’m with him 100% – HP should’ve gotten more credit after all these years of hard and good work. It must suck for the actors to then see some fantasy flick called HUGO getting all the credit just because it’s been directed by M.S. Not fair!!

  • giuseppe sallo

This guy always speaks the truth, but hollywood doesn’t like that, as so as the bloggers, who thinks this guy has an ego — but it’s honesty. Other sites, they “blast” him for speaking up, when he’s actually right. Oscars want to glamorize their favorite stars, if that means making Clooney/Pitt happy, then they’ll do it. But what about the “Underdogs”? The films that truly deserve recognition. Good on you, Danny boy! Speak up.

  • Lara

I find it weird how him and his co-stars were never invited to the Oscars, even has presenters. But ppl like that Hannah Montana girl and Zac Efron were invited .Twice. Stupid.

  • Bianca

i love how radcliffe is fearless when it comes to criticizing hollywood, swearing, and being naked. he could have played it safe post-potter, and that would have been a mistake. i wonder if it’s he that’s so smart, or if he has brilliant handlers.

  • sage parele

Whoah! So Rooney Mara got a nomination for that bland reboot of GWTDT but Daniel Radcliffe and other actors who have played charcters in triologies or sagas were not nominated for them? Amercians seem to only recognize their own kind. Hell even Naoomi Rapace who played Lisebeth in the original GWTDT did not get an Oscar nomination before.

  • Kilburn Hall

As a former film critic I can tell you that if you want to understand why a Deathly Hallows 2 or The Woman In Black was snubbed by Academy Of Motion Picture Science for Oscar consideration you have to understand the history of the Academy. It wasn’t until a few years ago that children’s movies were even considered. And the Academy never considered animation until Disney’s Sorcerer’s Apprentice broke the mold. The Academy just a few years ago revamped all of its rules, regulations, shortened the program. There are actually two different events with the main telecast awarding best film, actress actor etc while a second event, usually held on a Saturday afternoon now awards all the technical awards. One other thing you must remember- when the Oscar first started out there was no “green-screen.” Awards in technical categories were few. Before you start slamming the Oscar’s and decisions made about nominations and so forth it would be helpful if you had a working understanding of the Oscar’s history.

@mkhay: One of the best movies in history? Dude, please. It’s a good movie, entertaining and stuff. I’ve even read all the books. Now seriously, everything we saw on Harry Potter was already shown in The Lord of The Rings, Star Wars, and hundreds of other movies. It’s only so popular because it aims for the teenage public, while other ones, like LOTR, consist of a more mature reading. I accept that JK did a great job, but it’s just nothing new.
