Sean Penn Suing Empire's Lee Daniels For Defamation After Terrence Howard Comparisons

Sean Penn has filed a defamation lawsuit against Empire creator Lee Daniels after he accused him of domestic violence in comparison to Terrence Howard.

“That poor boy [Terrence] ain’t done nothing different than Marlon Brando or Sean Penn, and all of a sudden he’s some f—in’ demon. That’s a sign of the time, of race, of where we are right now in America,” Lee told THR, brushing off Terrence‘s legal troubles concerning domestic violence.

“As a result of Penn‘s status as a public figure, he has for years been the subject of scandalous, scurrilous, and baseless attacks,” the first paragraph of Sean‘s complain reads (via THR). “But Penn, like any citizen, has a right to defend himself and will no longer tolerate the reckless and malicious behavior of others, who seek to aggrandize themselves or their projects at his expense. Accordingly, and because of Daniels‘ defamatory statements, Penn brings this action for monetary relief, and to deter Daniels and others from their defamatory actions.”

“Third, and most problematic,” continues the lawsuit, “Daniels falsely equates Penn with Howard, even though, while he has certainly had several brushes with the law, Penn (unlike Howard) has never been arrested, much less convicted, for domestic violence, as his ex-wives (including Madonna) would confirm and attest.”

Sean is suing for $10 million.

I love that he says he was never arrested/convicted for domestic violence, but doesn’t say he wasn’t abusive. Bill Cosby is free but that doesn’t make him any less of a rapist.

  • VanityInsecurity

everything is not race-related. this shtick is getting old already. When Penn was in the spotlight he got dragged through the mud as well.. Anyone with abusive tendencies should be exposed, no matter race, religion etc..

  • Will

Good for Sean Penn he has every right to defend himself against slander, and it shines a big spotlight on Terrance the woman abuser.

  • Haven

Don’t get me started about Charlie Sheen. Oh, that’s right. He’s just a “bad boy.”

Thank you vanityinsecurity. Couldn’t agree more.

  • fiona

    Thank you!

  • fiona

Just because he never got arrested it doesn’t change the fact that he beat up his wife (Madonna) with a baseball ball batt and tied her up in a chair! Sounds like domestic violence to me!

  • GroundControl500

    How do you know that?

  • VanityInsecurity

whether Sean Penn is abusive or not ..it really isn’t the point here. Fact is people just can’t go around including public figures as examples of abusive behavior when the person he is trying to defend is a known woman beater. And we won’t know the absolute truth because Madonna NEVER pressed charges on Sean.

  • fiona

It’s on his wikipedia page, the washington post wrote about it, so did buzzfeed, read about it when i was a kid. It’s public acknowledge!

  • AeeJay

privileged black artists want to make everything seem that it is so that we can get sidetracked from the real issue here.. that Howard has admitted to hitting both wives. At least Sean never admitted to hitting Madonna.

  • AeeJay

Not being arrested ..opposed to being arrested is a BIG difference. He points that out because if you haven’t been arrested for something & convicted for it then you are presumed innocent. …that is the law!

  • GroundControl500

Well, if Wiki says so. LOL!

Who acknowledged it? Sean Penn? His alleged victims?
Not so sure any of these sources are reliable about celebrity gossip. The Washington Post repeats unsourced gossip just like tabloid rags. They should be ashamed of that but they just want a piece of that audience.

If all these things are true about Penn, why was he never arrested or charged?

  • Mrs. Freeze

You should google his and Madonna’s marital relationship. He was violent with her.

  • Mrs. Freeze

She divorced him because of it.

  • Mrs. Freeze

He was arrested but wasn’t charged because Madonna had them dropped.

  • devvv

Sean Penn was charged with felony domestic assault in 1988 for beating Madonna. He pleaded to misdemeanor. The number of men and women who get away with domestic violence is absolutely disgusting. What he did is widely known and commonly swept under the rug. Not being arrested does not make you innocent. A person who shoots and kills someone and then commits suicide was never arrested but guess what…they’re still a freaking murderer.

missed the point entirely.. Daniels is wrong for bringing up Penn’s name. Or anyones name for that matter. that is the real point here. You just can’t go around talking crap about other celebs while in the public eye. We all know Penn is abusive or was. Doesn’t matter at this point. What does matter is trying to demonize one artist for the other is pretty low imo.

  • Lola

this is public knowledge since the 80′s, Madonna was advised to drop the charges because “it would hurt her career”.
Sean Penn is an abusive woman beater regardless of conviction.

  • devvv

I didn’t miss the point at all. The point is Lee Daniels didn’t say anything negative about Sean Penn. They asked him about Terrence Howard’s legal troubles (no mention of abuse or specific charges) and his response was that he hadn’t done anything differently Penn and Brando. Where in that response did he demonize or defame Sean Penn? Where in that response is he talking crap or saying anything that isn’t true? The above statement said Penn had brushes with the law, how is that different than what Lee Daniels said?

  • VanityInsecurity

which part didn’t you understand? You cannot in the eyes of the law go around talk about another celeb in a derogatory way for the benefit of another. It’s unlawful & cause for a civil litigation. If it is against the law then it’s wrong. Or do you not believe in laws?
