U.S. Swimmers Detained at Rio Airport In Connection with Ryan Lochte's Robbery Case
US swimmers Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger are escorted to police headquarters at the Galeo International airport very early Thursday (August 18) in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.
The pair were already on their flight, which was set to depart on Wednesday (August 17), but were pulled from the airplane because more information was needed about an armed robbery case they reported.
Gunnar, Jack, and fellow American swimmers Ryan Lochte and James Feigen claimed they were robbed at gunpoint in Rio over the weekend, but police have reportedly found no evidence to back up the story.
A judge ordered that Ryan‘s passport be seized, but he is already back in the United States.
Patrick Sandusky, United States Olympic Committee spokesperson, told People in a statement, “Jack Conger and Gunnar Bentz were detained Wednesday night shortly before their flight was scheduled to depart from Rio. They were released by local authorities with the understanding that they would continue their discussions about the incident on Thursday.”
