News of the World

Arriving on Blu-Ray today is the award-winning and touching film News of the World.

Starring the highly regarded Tom Hanks, the film follows a Civil War veteran who travels town to town orating the news of the world when he runs into a kidnapped girl that was raised by the Kiowa people. To the child’s behest, he sets out to deliver the child to her aunt and uncle where they develop a true parental bond along the way.

Arguably a Western, the acting in the film is superb which we come to expect out of Hanks. However, another stand out is newcomer Helena Zengel who portrays a young girl, Johanna, who does a superb job of exhibiting her non-conventional upbringing. This film is rich with character, with life lessons of dealing with the past, and our human desire to connect. In addition, the respectful way the film handles the Kiowa tribe was great to see compared to the typical portrayal of Native Americans in older Western films.

The 1080p presentation is top notch since the film was originally captured digitally – it especially stands out in the picturesque plains or the rocky peaks of a shootout. The release also features a Dolby Atmos soundtrack which works well in the many subtle moments of the film.

Extras include deleted scenes, a featurette on the bond between the two main actors, and an in-depth look at the real Native American Kiowa people who were integral in the making of the film.

A solid all around movie, this release is highly recommended and especially baffling considering the main actors were both snubbed in this year’s Oscars. Worth the watch to understand the controversy of that snub alone.
