'Cats' Opening Weekend Box Office Numbers Revealed!

Cats has certainly been making headlines with critical reviews, but has it been making a big impact at the box office?

The film adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical opened to $6.5 million in its first weekend at the box office, according to Deadline on Sunday (December 22).

The estimated total comes in below its projected $10-$15 million opening.

The film currently commands a C+ CinemaScore, and a 19% rating at Rotten Tomatoes.

“While VFX were improved following the social media backlash to the 100M-plus viewed trailer back in July, the whole notion of dancing actor-felines continued to divide, if not freak out audiences. I hear that even Cats EP Steven Spielberg didn’t get a chance to see a final cut of Cats given the pic’s down-to-the minute post production,” Deadline reported.

An Updated Version of 'Cats' Is Reportedly Being Sent to Movie Theaters

The new movie Cats is now in theaters and in a rare move, it wasn’t even completed until days before the release date.

Director Tom Hooper has revealed that he didn’t complete the finishing touches on the movie until last Sunday, just one day before the world premiere event in New York City.

It seems that Tom has continued to edit the movie throughout the week as a new version of the film is reportedly being sent to movie theaters.

This note was reportedly sent to movie theater operations staff and managers: “DCDC and Deluxe-Technicolor will be sending updated FTR-20 SMPTE DCPs of Cats which will include some improved visual effects. The runtime is unchanged.”

The actual content of the movie will not be changed, but some visual effects may have been fixed.

Brie Larson is Really Upset She Wasn't in Asked to Be in 'Cats' (VIDEO)

Brie Larson is not happy.

While guest hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Wednesday night (December 18), the 30-year-old actress (jokingly) complained about not being cast in Cats.

“The most important question is, how the hell am I not in this movie?” Brie asked the audience. “I mean, they asked literally everyone else in Hollywood: Taylor Swift, Idris Elba, Jason frickin’ Derulo. I mean, I want in!”

Despite the movie now being out in theaters, that didn’t stop Brie from bargaining for a role.

“I’ll do whatever it takes,” Brie continued. “I’ll slurp milk from a bowl. I’ll get stuck on top of the fridge. I’ll put a dead bird in your slipper. I will have babies under your porch. Look, we have 48 hours to get me into this movie, and I am not going to rest until I am in a damn leotard chasing a laser pointer with Dame Judi Dench.”

‘Cats’ Movie vs. ‘Cats’ on Broadway – 5 Major Differences!

'Cats' Movie vs. 'Cats' on Broadway - 5 Major Differences!

The new movie Cats is now in theaters and it’s based on the Broadway musical of the same name. So, what is different?

Whenever a known property is adapted into a film, it’s common for big changes to be made. Here are five things that are different between the film and stage show:

  • 1. Taylor Swift wrote a new song called “Beautiful Ghosts” for the movie and it’s not featured in the Broadway show. While she sings it for the end credits, Francesca Hayward’s character Victoria performs it in the film.
  • 2. Victoria, the white cat, becomes a principal character in the movie. She’s a featured dancer in the Broadway musical, but the movie focuses on her story.
  • 3. Old Deuteronomy, the Jellicle leader, is portrayed by a woman for the first time in the movie. Judi Dench plays the role!
  • 4. Bombulurina, who is played by Swift, has a much smaller role in the film. The character is only featured in one song at the end of the movie while she is part of many musical numbers on stage.
  • 5. The plot is much clearer in the movie than in the Broadway musical, which is notorious for not being about much of anything. While the film still has the same general storyline as the stage musical, it’s much easier to understand what’s going on in the movie!

Is There a 'Cats' End Credits Scene?

The new movie musical Cats is launching into theaters this weekend and fans who check it out might be wondering if they should stick around for a post-credits scene.

Lots of movies these days include an extra scene either during or at the end of the credits roll to tease potential sequels or leave fans with one last look into the world of the film.

We can confirm that Cats does not have an end credits scene, so feel free to leave without worrying about missing any additional footage.

If you stay for the credits, you’ll get to hear Taylor Swift‘s version of the song “Beautiful Ghosts,” which she wrote for the movie with composer Andrew Lloyd Webber.
