Anton Yelchin's Role Will Not Be Re-Cast in 'Star Trek' Series

Anton Yelchin will be making one of his final appearances on screen in the upcoming film Star Trek Beyond and his role of Chekov will not be re-cast for the series.

JJ Abrams, who directed the first two films in the rebooted franchise and produced the third movie, spoke out in an interview with the Toronto Sun.

“I would say there’s no replacing him,” JJ said. “There’s no re-casting. I can’t possibly imagine that, and I think Anton deserves better.”

Anton died on June 19 in a freak accident after his Jeep rolled down his driveway and crushed him against a gate.

'Star Trek' Cast Gathered at Chris Pine's Home to Mourn Anton Yelchin's Death

Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana step out for dinner at Madeo restaurant on Friday night (July 15) in West Hollywood, Calif.

The cast of Star Trek Beyond – including John Cho, Simon Pegg, and Karl Urban, as well as producer JJ Abrams and Zoe‘s husband Marco Perego – went out for a dinner following their press junket.

Chris recently revealed that he gathered the cast at his home to mourn the death of their co-star Anton Yelchin.

“It’s been a very difficult few weeks,” Chris told TV Week. “It’s hard to talk about; hard to encapsulate someone’s life in some sort of sound bite or tidbit. We hung out at my house and it was just nice to have the family around to help deal with a loss like this and experience mourning at such an intense level.”

James Cameron Throws Shade at J.J. Abrams & 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'

Avatar director James Cameron just made his feelings known about J.J. Abrams‘ film Star Wars: The Force Awakens in a new video interview with Keely Stinner.

“I have to say that I felt that George [Lucas]‘s group of six films had more innovative visual imagination, and this film was more a retrenchment to things you had seen before and characters you had seen before,” James said about the new film. “It took a few baby steps forward with new characters. So, for me, the jury is out. I want to see where they go with it.”

Star Wars: The Force Awakens happens to be the third grossing film of all time, behind two of James‘ films (Titanic and Avatar).
