Judi Dench Hasn't Seen 'Cats,' Reacts to Her Razzie Nomination

Judi Dench says that she still hasn’t seen her controversial movie Cats and she’s reacting to the news that she was nominated for Worst Supporting Actress at the Razzies.

The 85-year-old actress played the role of Old Deuteronomy in the film and she says she hasn’t even read about what people think of the movie.

“I didn’t read anything about the response to it, nor have I seen it,” Judi said on BBC Radio 4 (via EW).

“I’ve only seen a picture of myself [from the film],” she added. “I once had a cat [who looked] like that, called Carpet, and I didn’t realize I was playing Carpet. I thought I was playing a kind of, you know, mangier cat who didn’t have much fur. I didn’t realize I was this wonderful show cat!”

Judi says she hasn’t watched the movie because of her struggle with macular degeneration, which makes it hard for her to read or view films.

“I was aware of the response only slightly, I think people had been rather kind to me,” she said. When told she is nominated for a Razzie, Judi said, “Oh, am I? That would be good! As far as I know, that’s a first!”

Judi Dench Says Her 'Cats' Character is Transgender

Judi Dench is the first woman to play the role of Old Deutoronomy in the musical Cats and now she says the character is transgender.

The 85-year-old actress was actually supposed to appear in the West End stage production of Cats in 1981, but she has to drop out when she snapped her achilles tendon.

“Its glorious to have been included in it, I must say,” Judi told Out about being included in the movie version. “[It was] nerve wracking, because all I can hear is Brian Blessed all the time in the production that I wasn’t able to be in.” (Blessed played Old Deutoronomy in the stage show)

Judi says that it was “totally unexpected” to play the traditionally male role. She added, “I kind of call it ‘trans Deuteronomy,’ is the part for me, you know.”

What Is 'Cats' About? Movie Trailer Finally Explains Plot to Confused Broadway Fans

One thing that most Broadway fans agree on is that the plot of the musical Cats is super confusing and people aren’t even sure what the show is about.

When it was announced that the musical would be made into a movie, the news was met with lots of groans. But now the latest trailer for the film has done something that previous marketing materials never did… it explained the plot!

Judi Dench‘s Old Deuteronomy does a voiceover in the new trailer and she basically reveals what is going on in the film: “Tonight is a magical night where I choose the cat that deserves a new life… I judge a cat by its soul.”

“The most deserving cat will be reborn into another life so they can be who they’ve always dreamed of being,” Robbie Fairchild‘s Munkustrap then says.

Here’s the synopsis provided by Universal: “Over the course of a single night, a tribe of cats called the Jellicles make what is known as ‘the Jellicle choice’ and decide which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life.”

'Cats' Will Miss Deadlines for Golden Globes & More Awards

Don’t expect to see the cast of the movie Cats at the 2020 Golden Globes because the film is going to miss the eligibility deadline.

Indiewire reports that the movie will not be screened for awards voters until mid-December, which means it will miss the deadlines for several prestigious awards.

The final screening for the Golden Globes voters can be held on December 4. Other awards that the movie will miss including the SAG Awards, which close nominations on December 8, and the National Board of Review Awards, which announce their winners on December 3.

The New York Film Critics have even been told that they should not expect to see the movie before they vote on December 4.

Cats will be released in time for Oscars consideration, but the release date of December 20 won’t give voters that much time to see the film as voting for nominations closes on January 7.

Taylor Swift will be eligible for Best Original Song as she has co-written a new song for the movie with composer Andrew Lloyd Webber.
