American Idol's La'Porsha Renae Says She Chose to Be Straight

La’Porsha Renae, who came in second place on the final season of American Idol, is under fire for comments she wrote on Twitter about how she “chose to be heterosexual after being homosexual for 2 years.”

The 23-year-old singer sent out a bunch of tweets after someone accused her of being homophobic.

“Phobia is a fear. I’m not afraid of homosexuals, nor do I hate them. I respect and love EVERYONE,” La’Porsha wrote. “Go educate yourself on my statement and come correct or don’t come at all.”

One Twitter user then wrote to her and said, “you do believe they’re choosing it and that’s wrong I watched my brother grow up gay he was born that way.”

“You’re wrong to think it’s not a choice for some….because it was for me. #Truth,” La’Porsha responded. “And the bigger picture of my statement was that homosexuals should be loved and respected, not dehumanized…not whether/not it was a choice.”

American Idol's La'Porsha Renae Says She Doesn't Agree with LGBT Lifestyle, Later Clarifies Comments

American Idol‘s final runner-up La’Porsha Renae is clarifying comments about the LGBT “lifestyle” that have placed her in hot water.

The 22-year-old singer, who came in second place on the show’s farewell season, was asked to comment about the anti-LGBT bill passed into law in her home state of Mississippi.

“This is how I feel about the LGBT community: They are people just like us. They’re not animals as someone [Manny Pacquiao] stated before. They’re people with feelings. Although all of us may not agree with that particular lifestyle for religious reasons, whatever the reason is, you still treat each other with respect. Everybody is a human being. We should be able to coexist with one another,” La’Porsha said (via Gossip Cop). “I am one of the people who don’t really agree with that lifestyle. I wasn’t brought up that way. It wasn’t how I was raised. But I do have a lot of friends and a lot of people that I love dearly who are gay and homosexual and they’re such sweet, nice people. We should just respect each other’s differences and opinions and move on.”

La’Porsha later took to her Periscope account to say she “didn’t mean to hurt anyone” with her comments.

“I tried to be as open and honest and neutral as possible, but that’s the way interviews go. Sometimes when you do interviews, it gets twisted up,” she said. “I can understand when I read it back why people were offended, and for that I deeply apologize. I wasn’t trying to offend anyone. I was just trying to honestly answer a question that caught me off guard. It was supposed to be an interview about singing, and it became political and I’m not a political person at all.”
