NBC has announced its next foray into live performance – a production of Peter Pan!
The live three-hour musical event will air on December 4, execs revealed during the panel at the 2014 Television Critics Association Tour on Sunday (January 19) in Los Angeles.
“We’ve narrowed it down to about three titles,” NBC entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt told THR back in December. “They all have complicated rights issues and I don’t know if we’re going to be able to get them. In the next couple of weeks — we want to do this quickly — we’ll zero in on something because we have to produce it. We now have less than a year. When we did Sound of Music, we literally spent 18 months on it and had a lot to learn. We also learned a lot and I think we don’t have as big of a learning curve for next time.”
NBC previously aired Peter Pan as live productions in 1954, 1955, and lastly in 1960, all starring the legendary actress Mary Martin. Just like the recent The Sound of Music live production, none of those were performed in front of a live audience. The most recent production was released on DVD in the 90s.
The Sound of Music Live delivered 18.6 million viewers and a 4.6 rating during its first airing, despite mixed reviews from critics.
