Spike Lee Accidentally Reveals Cannes Film Festival's Palme d'Or Winner Before All Other Awards

Spike Lee accidentally read off the winner of the top prize of the night before all of the other awards during the closing ceremony of the 2021 Cannes Film Festival!

The 64-year-old filmmaker served as the jury president this year and the moment happened during the awards ceremony on Saturday night (July 17) in Cannes, France.

To kick off the event, the host asked Spike to announce “which prize is the first prize.” He must have misunderstood the comment because he revealed the “first prize winner” of the ceremony instead of the first award that was supposed to be announced.

Spike revealed that the Palme d’Or winner this year is Titane, directed by Julia Ducournau. This marks only the second time that a female-directed film has won the top prize!

The moment is already being compared to the Oscars mishap a few years ago when the wrong Best Picture winner was announced.
