Julie Bowen Tells the Real Story Behind That Viral Headline That She Helped Save an Injured Hiker

Julie Bowen and her sister, infectious disease specialist Dr Annie Luetkemeyer from the University of California, San Francisco, were recently on a hike in Utah’s Arches National Park when a hiker collapsed and cracked her head open.

The hiker, a woman named Minnie John, actually told her side of the story in a lengthy Facebook post which caused headlines saying Julie helped the situation! Now, Julie is telling her side of the story.

While guest hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live, Julie said it was actually her sister, the doctor, who sprung into action when they encountered the injured hiker.

“She goes ‘Meredith Grey’ right away, applying pressure, doing doctor stuff,” Julie said. “And I brought my professional expertise to the table by yelling things I’d heard on episodes of ‘ER’.”

“As my sister Annie unrolls the gauze in front of bloody Minnie John and opens it, she says ‘Does anyone have a knife?’ Of course [my son] had a knife,” Julie continued. “I’ve never seen a 14-year-old that happy and I don’t have parental controls on the Wi-Fi.”

“[Minnie] started looking at me weird and she said ‘Why do I know you? Are you an actress?’ And I was so embarrassed about how useless I had been I said, ‘Yes! I am! I’m Elizabeth Banks!’ But then my sister told her I was on ‘Modern Family’ and Minnie was a fan and got very excited,” Julie said.

“Look, I know this isn’t the point here. But believe me, getting recognized by someone who has sustained serious injury is extremely flattering,” she added. “So just to recap, everyone helped save this woman. My sister, my twins, my knife-y son. And I did nothing.”
