“As a kid, a lot of my confidence was really fake,” Tom told GQ. “But, really, inside I was, ‘Oh, my God, I’m … terrified.’”

To calm his nerves on set, Tom said that he learned to convince himself to focus on feeling excited.

“I was given this piece of advice as a kid that was really helpful, which is: If you think about the actual physical feeling of being nervous, it’s the same physical feeling as being excited,” Tom explained.

While this new outlook helped, Tom quickly found himself feeling burned out, but couldn’t figure out how to set work-life boundaries for himself.

Then one day, Elizabeth Olsen – who has worked with Tom on several Marvel movies – gave him advice on how to stand up for himself.

“She gave me an amazing piece of advice: ‘No’ is a full sentence …‘No’ is enough,” Tom recalled.

That advice came in handy for Tom when he was on the international press tour for Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017, in which he traveled across 17 different countries.

While at a press conference in China, Tom had reached his breaking point and was “really ill.” He ended up running off stage and throwing up.

“I was under a lot of pressure to finish the day’s work,” Tom said. “That was the first time I was really like, ‘No, I’m done now. I’ve given you everything.’”

While filming the last scene for Spider-Man: No Way Home, Tom once again turned to Elizabeth‘s advice.

“I kept stopping [the shoot] and being like, ‘I’m so sorry, I just don’t believe what I’m saying,’” Tom said.

Director Jon Watts then pulled Tom aside to discuss the scene and they came up with a new idea together.

“Then we pitched it to the writers,” Tom said. “They rewrote it, and it works great.”
