Bill Paxton's Family to Receive $1 Million Partial Settlement in Wrongful Death Suit

Bill Paxton‘s family has received a partial settlement with an anesthesiologist group in the wrongful death suit they filed after the actor’s death in 2017.

Court documents filed on Wednesday (February 23) with the Los Angeles Superior Court state that the attorneys for co-defendants General Anesthesia Specialists Partnership are looking to have a settlement of $1 million approved, per People.

The company was involved with Bill‘s heart surgery, which occurred at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles less than two weeks before his death in 2017 at the age of 61.

The documents say that there was an intent to reach a settlement that would “reasonably compensate plaintiffs and avoid exposing defendant to an expensive and time consuming litigation,” though General Anesthesia denied any direct responsibility in the actor’s death.

The lawsuit was filed in 2018 by Bill‘s widow Louise Paxton and their children, James and Lydia Paxton. A trial for the remainder of the suit has been scheduled for September 19.

Other defendants in the lawsuit are Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and Dr. Ali Khoynezhad, a cardiothoracic surgeon employed by Cedars-Sinai. The Paxton family alleges the surgeon gave the actor “negligent diagnosis, management, and treatment,” which ultimately resulted in his untimely death.

The family also claims Cedars-Sinai Medical Center “failed to disclose that [Dr. Khoynezhad] was going to use a high risk and unconventional surgical approach with which he lacked experience and which was, based upon information and belief, beyond the scope of his privileges.”

They also allege that Dr. Khoynezhad was “not in the hospital” when Bill “began suffering the complications” and that he did not arrange for “continuous care and coverage” for the actor while he was away. According to the suit, this created “a delay in treatment resulting in damage.”

One of Bill‘s former co-stars recently paid tribute to the late actor.
