What Happened to 'The Staircase' Subject Michael Peterson & Where Is He Now?

The Staircase was back with episode number two on HBO Max this week, and a lot of fans are questioning – what actually happened to Michael Peterson?

Portrayed by Colin Firth in the mini docu-series, Michael was put on trial for the murder of his wife, Kathleen Peterson, and charged with her death in 2003.

Following being charged with Kathleen‘s death in 2003, Michael spent eight years in prison before his case was retried in 2016.

Just before that retrial, he was placed on house arrest and during his retrial, submitted an Alford Plea, which is a guilty plea where a defendant maintains their innocence but admits that the prosecution’s evidence would likely result in a guilty verdict if brought to trial.

He was freed after that.

Following his release, Michael wrote a memoir called “Behind the Staircase”, and a sequel “Beyond the Staircase”.

His defense attorney David Rudolf told Oxygen in 2019 that Michael is currently living in Durham in a ground floor apartment…so no staircase. He also sold the house he owned with his wife Kathleen back in 2004.

As of today, Michael, now 78, is completely free and out of prison.
