Issa Rae Dishes On Hiring Her Favorite Rap Artists To Work on New Show 'Rap Sh!t'

Issa Rae is talking all about her new HBOMax show, Rap Sh!t.

The 37-year-old actress and producer made an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers on Monday (July 18) and opened up about hiring her favorite rap artists to work on the series.

Issa revealed that she recruited PineappleCITI, Ncognita and Dreezy to help pen the original songs heard in the show.

“We were able to have a traditional writers room, which was really funny. Brilliant writers, some of them were from Miami. And then, just to be able to have authentic rap—like the music has to be good, they actually have to be good rappers, we got to employ some of my favorite rap artists,” she shared.

Issa added, “They wrote lyrics for the characters, and we had music camps to make music for the show, and it was like an intricate process. And then, of course, the two kind of met up, and it was great. I’m really proud of the music on the show.”

If you’re unfamiliar, Rap Sh!t follows the story of two former high school friends from Miami who reunite to form a rap group. The show features all original music, which Issa recently revealed was written by actual rappers.

It will debut on July 21.
