James Corden Reveals The Real Reason Why He's Leaving 'The Late Late Show'

James Corden is opening up about his upcoming departure from The Late Late Show.

If you forgot, the 44-year-old entertainer announced back in April 2022 that he will be exiting the late-night show after hosting it for nearly nine years in the spring of 2023.

In a new interview on The Drew Barrymore Show, James revealed the real reason why he’s leaving the show and explained why it was a “very easy decision” for him.

“Look it’s not easy in any way to walk away from something that is so, I mean, I’ll never work in a better environment than the one I work in now,” James explained. ”Nothing about leaving the show was to do with not enjoying it. I love it.”

“But the truth is it became a very easy decision,” James continued, “because I always knew it was an adventure and I never, ever considered it to be the final destination.”

James went on to say that he is also wants to spend more time in London with his wife Julia and their kids Max, 11, Carey, 8, and Charlotte, 5.

This became very clear to James last year when he was filming his Amazon Prime Video series Mammals.

“One day I was filming on a Sunday and I came downstairs, it was about 6 a.m. and my son, who was 10 at the time, was sat on the stairs and he said, ‘Are you working today?’ and I said, ‘I am,’” James recalled. “And he said, ‘I thought, well it’s Sunday,’ and I said, ‘I know, buddy, but this schedule’s just all over the place. We just got to get it done because we only have a tiny amount of time before we have to go back and do the show,’ and his face just kind of dropped.”

He continued, “I got in the car and I called my wife Jules and I said, ‘I’ve realized, best case scenario, we have six more summers where Max even remotely wants to be around us and I cannot waste another one.’”

“If I really want to do this other work, that cannot be at the expense of our children, our family,” James added. “That is really all it comes down to.”

As for when his final Late Late Show airs in the spring, James admitted, “I will be a mess on that last show. I will cry my eyes out.”

“But I will know, at my core, that the best thing for me and the best thing for us as a family is to put down some roots in London,” James added. ”And it feels absolutely right in every single way.”

We’ve previously speculated about who might replace James on the show and came up with 12 options. Would you like to see any of them in the shot seat? Let us know in the comments!
