The 1929 Oscar ceremony was the first ever, and Charlie Chaplin was nominated for four awards Best Actor, Best Writer, Best Director for a Comedy, and Outstanding Picture.

While no rules had been violated, The Academy did have a fear that he would sweep all four categories. So, they actually took his individual nominations back, and decided to present him with a special Honorary Award “for writing, acting, directing, and producing The Circus.”
