“A 19-year-old man from Southampton was arrested on suspicion of breach or trespass of a protected site and possession of an offensive weapon,” the police said. “Security processes were triggered within moments of the man entering the grounds and he did not enter any buildings.”

The man was found to be carrying a crossbow, which was taken by police at the time of arrest.

“The man was taken into custody and has undergone a mental health assessment — he has since been sectioned under the Mental Health Act and remains in the care of medical professionals,” the statement continued.

Metropolitan Police Specialist Operations are still investigating the event. On Saturday, they said that they don’t believe there is a wider danger to the public.

Queen Elizabeth and the rest of the Royal Family were informed during their Christmas celebrations that the incident had taken place. It was the Queen’s first holiday without her husband Prince Philip, who passed away in April.

She made a number of changes to her Christmas this year, cancelling the traditional royal walk amid surging COVID-19 cases. She did deliver her annual Christmas speech and you can see the video here.
