aespa is everywhere. But why stop in the physical realm?
The massively successful SM Entertainment South Korean K-pop girl group has steadily gone from strength to strength globally ever since their November 2020 debut with their futuristic visuals and catchy, wonderfully erratic hit singles like “Black Mamba” and “Next Level,” but they’ve also taken on an even more ambitious territory: the metaverse.
The group’s members – KARINA, WINTER, NINGNING and GISELLE – have four virtual counterparts (or “æ”), as well as an entire virtual world (“KWANGYA”) being built before our very eyes in a digital realm, with an action-packed narrative explored in mini-episodes that rival the the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
With their latest mini-album GIRLS released earlier this month, following a headline-making main stage set at this year’s Coachella, the troupe is only continuing to shatter their own records: the collection debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, becoming their first Top 10 album stateside.
With their MYs – the name of their loyal fanbase – by their side, aespa is only continuing to assert themselves as one of the most exciting, impactful new girl groups in the music industry.
We had a chat with aespa about their virtual world, their new music and their impact on the industry.
