“It feels surreal. We’re just so happy that it’s finally able to come out, you know, in a different way than expected again, planned, he says of the film’s digital release amid the pandemic.

“It is a different time. All of the industry and everybody’s eyes are on this thinking like ‘Oh, wow, how is this going to work?’ Let’s put this into perspective. You know, even when this was coming out, when they first delayed it, this is how I always felt. Not only is it, you know, that you can’t go to the movie theater, even if you wanted to but, more importantly, this is a health crisis. We care about people. This a family movie, too, but it’s also just a movie at the end of the day. I mean, we love what we do. We are so proud of the film and we can’t wait for the world to see it. It’s gorgeous. But it’s health first. Money and movies come second.”

The actor, who plays Yao in the film, also opened up about the “boot camp”-like training for the movie.

“When I think about it, my legs start hurting. I knew we would probably need training, but when we got there, I didn’t expect to be doing the hardest physical training of my entire life. And I’m a pretty active dude. It was incredibly intense. We landed in Auckland and the next day was training. We did physical labor for four hours a day. And it was basically like very intense physical training. It made you feel like you were working in the fields all day,” he revealed of the stunt, archery and horseback riding training.

“We would finish that, then be shuttled to stunt training. We had to make sure we could do stunts and fight. And then we were doing archery and horseback riding. We even did marching. They built an army and we trained with them and like,” adding that “it was wonderful. It gave me so much.”

Mulan's Tzi Ma Praises Yifei Liu In Upcoming Disney+ Movie: 'She Gives Her Entire Being' To The Movie

Tzi Ma is opening up about the new live action Mulan movie and praising his on-screen daughter, Yifei Liu.

The 58-year-old actor stars as Fa Zhou in the flick, debuting on Disney+ this week, and in a new interview with Digital Spy, can’t say enough great thinks about Yifei.

“She gives her entire being. She embodies that spirit,” he shared about her role as the title character. “Her ability to connect with other cast members where you feel the chemistry of these relationships – familial relationships, the brotherhood.”

Tzi continues that he was blown away by her dedication to the training she underwent for the role, too.

“[The amount of] training itself, it’s ridiculous. Military training, combat training, stunt training, stamina training. And we all live in the same place, in the same hotel. We see each other every day. The boys are complaining. ‘Oh my god, I can’t walk, that killed me’. But not a word from Yifei.”

He adds, “She raises the bar, and I think (director) Niki (Caro) has said that in interviews. You’ve got to bring your A-game or you’re going to disappear in the scene…She’s kind. There’s no mean bone in this young lady.”

Tzi also opened up about how much the live action Mulan is going to mean to everyone, especially the Asian population.

“You’ll be proud of it,” Tzi says. “It is cinematic. It is meant for the big screen. But I’m relieved that finally the world is going to get an opportunity to see it. It’s really, really an amazing piece of work.”

He goes on, “I’m sure when [Asian diaspora] kids see it, immediately it’s going to happen here, in their minds – seeing someone who looks like them. Throughout the entire screen! Every character is going to look like you. It blows my mind. The film is a celebration. A celebration of culture, a celebration of family, a celebration of women’s contributions to our world. And you’re going to see – even more so than any other time – a group of men who are Asian, who are in so many different characters and sizes and shapes, and the camaraderie. I don’t think I’ve seen it like this ever in a Hollywood film.”

“I can’t even begin to tell you what that means to me.”

Mulan premieres Friday, September 4 on Disney+ for a nominal fee for streaming. It will be free to stream in December.

'Mulan' Director Niki Caro Shares Why They Decided Not To Include Mushu In Live Action Movie

Niki Caro is opening up more about the live action version of Mulan, which is set to premiere this week on Disney+, particularly about why Mushu isn’t in it.

The director, alongside star Yifei Liu, explained that why the dragon isn’t featured in the new movie, he is represented in several ways.

“We were very inspired about what Mushu brought to the animation which was humor and levity,” she says. “The challenge was to bring that to Mulan’s real relationships with her fellow soldiers.”

Niki continued, “Mushu, beloved as that character is in the animation, was Mulan’s confidante, and part of bringing it to live action is to commit to the realism of her journey. And she had to make those relationships with her fellow soldiers.”

Previously, producer Jason Reed shared that the creative team had a lot of conversations about including the popular animated animal.

This other character from the animated version won’t be appearing in the live action film either.
