Mya Taylor made history by becoming the first ever transgender actress to win a Spirit Award at the 2016 Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday afternoon (February 27) in Santa Monica, Calif.

The 24-year-old actress was honored with the Best Supporting Actress award for her role in Tangerine.

“There is transgender talent,” Mya said in her acceptance speech at the ceremony. “There’s very beautiful transgender talent. So, you better get it out there and put it in your next movie.”

The reality star and Olympic gold medalist was showing her support for the transgender actress and the film, which follows a trans sex worker in Los Angeles.

“I learned so much from this film… For me it was brutally honest. Stories like this are nothing but good for our community,” Caitlyn told Variety.

She added, “I want to see more understanding. I want to see the whole movement move forward. The movie brought to light the biggest issue in our community which is trans women of color.”
