NBA Will Turn Arenas Into Voting Locations in November, Playoff Games to Resume

The NBA has reached an agreement with the players union to resume playoff games this weekend and part of the deal was turning basketball arenas into voting locations this November!

There was a three-day pause in games this week while players protested the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisc.

“We had a candid, impassioned and productive conversation yesterday between NBA players, coaches and team governors regarding next steps to further our collective efforts and actions in support of social justice and racial equality,” National Basketball Players Association Executive Director Michele Roberts and NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. “Among others, the attendees included player and team representatives of all 13 teams in Orlando. All parties agreed to resume NBA playoff games on Saturday, Aug. 29 with the understanding that the league together with the players will work to enact the following commitments.”

Among the commitments are to create a social justice coalition with the NBA and its players, to promote civic engagement via advertising spots in each playoff game, and finally to turn arenas into voting locations this November.

The NBA Playoff Games Are Postponed Again

The NBA playoffs are continuing to be postponed amid an ongoing boycott from basketball players due to the police shooting of Jacob Blake, which has sparked outcry across the nation.

One day before (August 26), it was revealed the Milwaukee Bucks would not play in protest of police brutality, and more teams joined in solidarity with the decision to boycott.

“NBA playoff games for today will not be played as scheduled. We are hopeful to resume games either Friday or Saturday,” the association announced with further clarification about their plans.

“There is a video conference call meeting scheduled later this afternoon between a group of NBA players and team governors representing the 13 teams in Orlando, along with representatives from the National Basketball Players Association and the league office and NBA Labor Relations Committee Chairman Michael Jordan, to discuss next steps.”

Here is more about what happened to kick off the postponement.

NBA Playoff Games Postponed Due to Jacob Blake Shooting

The Milwaukee Bucks are not playing tonight (August 26) in protest of police brutality, and as a result, the playoff games are being postponed.

The NBA basketball team confirmed that they would not play their playoff game on Wednesday afternoon in protest of the recent police shooting of Jacob Blake.

“The Milwaukee Bucks have decided to boycott Game 5, source tells ESPN,” Adrian Wojnarowski reported.

“The Bucks players made this decision in the wake of the Jacob Blake shooting in Wisconsin, ultimately deciding that they wouldn’t leave the locker room for the start of Game 5 against Orlando.”

The Bucks were scheduled to play against the Orlando Magic in Game 5 of the first round of the NBA playoffs. Magic players and referees were on the floor for the game, but Milwaukee never arrived to the floor. Everyone then left the floor. The Bucks are currently leading the series 3-1. Other NBA teams have discussed boycotting their playoff games.

“In light of the Milwaukee Bucks’ decision to not take the floor today for Game 5 against the Orlando Magic, today’s three games…have been postponed. Game 5 of each series will be rescheduled,” the NBA then announced.

NBA Players Will Be Given a Ring That Can Predict Coronavirus Symptoms Days in Advance

NBA players will be given a “smart ring” that has the capability of predicting symptoms of COVID-19 up to three days in advance.

The NBA will resume the 2019-20 season on July 30 with all teams playing at Disney World in Orlando, Fla.

The National Basketball Players Association sent out a memo to all players this week and an Oura ring was offeered to each player. The “ring will track the health of the player and give early warning signs if a player is in danger of contracting the coronavirus,” according to CBS Sports.

It will not be required for players to wear the ring, but it definitely seems like a smart idea. Some of the things that the ring tracks are “temperature, respiratory rate, heart rate, and sleeping patterns.”

Teams will only have access to the ring’s data for their players if the players are in danger of contracting COVID-19.
