Vanessa Bryant Says Her Mom Is Trying to 'Extort a Financial Windfall' From Her Family

Vanessa Bryant is putting her mother on blast.

The 38-year-old widow of Kobe Bryant posted a message to her Instagram Story on Thursday (December 17) claiming that her mother, Sofia Laine, is trying to extort her family.

“My mother is continuing to try and find ways to extort a financial windfall from our family. I have supported her for nearly twenty years, and she was never my or Kobe‘s personal assistant, nor was she a nanny. I have always been a stay-at-home mother and my husband and I were our daughter’s full-time care givers. For nearly two decades, we arranged for my mother to live in our nearby properties, at no cost to her because she had claimed that she didn’t have any money to buy her own home after her divorce,” she wrote.

“My husband and I felt it was best for her not to live in our home. She watched our girls from time to time, just like most grandparents do. She did not take care of business issues or expenses. She was a grandmother who was supported by me and her son-in-law at my request. She now wants to back charge me $96 per hour for supposedly working 12 hours a day for 18 years for watching her grandchildren. In reality, she only occasionally babysat my older girls when they were toddlers. As of ten years ago, our kids were full time students and athletes and I didn’t have another child until 2016,” she continued.

“Her claims are obviously false but I still tried, repeatedly, to work things out with my mother. Contrary to what she’s saying, I haven’t left my children’s side since the accident except to visit the cemetery to make arrangements. Earlier this year, I was looking for a new home for her and, a week later she went on television and gave an interview disparaging our family and making false accusations while living rent-free in a gated apartment complex in Newport Coast. Even after that betrayal, I was willing to provide my mother with monthly support for the rest of her life and that wasn’t good enough. She, instead, contacted me through intermediaries (contrary to what she claims, my phone number hasn’t changed) and demanded $5 million, a house and a Mercedes SUV,” she added.

“Because I did not give in to her hurtful threats and monetary requests, she has spiraled out of control and is making false and absurd claims. She is now trying to get more money than my husband and I ever spent to provide for her while he was alive. She has no regard for how this is affecting my children and me. She wants to live off of my daughters and me for the rest of her life while continuing to collect monthly alimony from her ex-husband since 2004. My husband and I have never discourage or kept her from providing for herself. This lawsuit is frivolous, disgraceful, and unimaginably hurtful. My husband never promised my mother anything, and he would be so disappointed in her behavior and lack of empathy.”

Vanessa Bryant is reflecting on the first time she met Kobe Bryant.

“Love at first sight 11/27/99 #21,” Vanessa wrote along with a photo of she and Kobe at Disneyland.

Last year, Kobe honored the special day, sharing the same Disneyland pic with Vanessa along with a throwback photo of the couple on Instagram.

“On this day 20 years ago I met my best friend, my Queen @vanessabryant,” Kobe captioned his post. “I decided to take her on a date to Disneyland tonight to celebrate old school style (pre 4princesses) I love you my mamacita per sempre.”

Kobe and Vanessa got married in 2001 and had four daughters together, Natalia, 17, Gianna, 13, Bianka, 3, and Capri, 1. The athlete and Gianna tragically died in a helicopter crash alongside seven others in January.

Vanessa shared an old photo of Kobe with Lakers General Manager Rob Pelinka, along with the caption, “Congratulations Uncle P! Congratulations @Lakers Kobe was right RP ‘stay the course- block out the noise’ – @kobebryant.”

She also added, “Wish Kobe and Gianna were here to see this.”

The win marks the Lakers’ 17th championship, and first since Kobe led the team to victory back in 2010.

Vanessa Bryant Slams Her Mother for Having 'Audacity' to Give Negative TV Interview

Vanessa Bryant is slamming her mother Sofia Urbieta Laine after she gave an interview claiming Vanessa kicked her out of the house after the tragic deaths of Kobe Bryant and Gianna Bryant in a helicopter accident earlier this year.

“She told me, ‘I need you to get out of this house.’ She also told me that she wanted her car and she wants it now,” Sofia said during an interview. She apparently was crying during the interview as well.

Now, Vanessa has issued a statement firing back at her mother’s claims.

“My husband and daughter passed away unexpectedly, and yet my mother had the audacity to do a television interview speaking negatively of me while shedding tears for a car and a house that were not in her name,” Vanessa said in a statement (via Page Six).

“She has removed all her diamond jewelry, emptied the apartment I provided, and put away the furniture to make it look like she doesn’t have my support. My husband and I have supported her financially for the past 20 years, and continue to do so, in addition to her monthly alimony,” she added.

Vanessa added that her mother “has not been physically present or emotionally supportive of my daughters or me” since the late January tragedy.

“Now I see what is most important to my mother and it’s more than painful,” she said. “I hope that everything that is coming out about our personal relationship ends here.”

It’s obviously been an extremely difficult time for Vanessa and her family after losing Kobe and Gigi, 13. She recently had to mark Kobe‘s first birthday after his death.

Our continued thoughts are with Vanessa and daughters Natalia, Bianka, and Capri.

Vanessa Bryant Shares Heartbreaking Tribute To Kobe Bryant On His Birthday: 'I’m Mad I Didn’t Go First'

Vanessa Bryant is remembering her late husband, Kobe Bryant, on what would have been his 42nd birthday.

“To my baby~ Happy birthday,” Vanessa started with her heartbreaking note on Instagram. “I love you and miss you more than I can ever explain. I wish you and Gigi were here to celebrate YOU! I wish I could make you your fav food or a birthday cake with my Gigi.”

She continued, “I miss your big hugs, your kisses, your smile, your loud ass deep laugh. I miss teasing you, making you laugh and bursting your bubble. I miss you sitting on my lap like my big baby that you are. I think about your tenderness and patience all the time. I think about everything you would do in situations to help me deal with everything thrown my way.”

“Thank you for growing up with me and teaching me how to be strong. How to try to see the best in people but cutout the bs. Your thoughtful gestures and the amazing way you made us all feel is extremely missed. I picture your smile and wide big welcoming hugs daily.”

Vanessa reflected on how life has been without Kobe and their daughter, Gianna, with them since the helicopter crash in January.

“I’ve been completely broken inside,” she admitted. “As much as I want to cry, I put a smile on my face to make our daughters days shine a little brighter. I’m not the strong one, they are. They’re strong and resilient. I’m sure you’re proud of them. They put a smile on my face everyday.”

She went on, saying that she wishes she “could wake up from this horrible nightmare. I wish I could surprise our girls and welcome you and Gigi home to us. I’m mad I didn’t go first. I always wanted to go first so that I selfishly didn’t have to feel this heartache. You were supposed to miss me. Gigi was supposed to be here with her sisters. It should’ve been me.”

“There’s so much I wish I could tell you and show you and Gigi. So many things you would both be happy to see and be a part of. So many milestones for our girls. So many things you would be proud of. I’m so thankful I have pieces of heaven here on earth to wake up for- thanks to YOU,” she expressed.

Vanessa concluded, “Thank you for loving me enough to last several lifetimes. In every lifetime I would choose YOU. Thank you for showing me what real love is. Thank YOU for everything. I know my Gigi is celebrating you like she always has on our special days. I miss my thoughtful princess so much! Natalia, Gianna, Bianka, Capri and I wish you a happy birthday my love. I love you for now, forever and for always.”
