Kirsten Dunst: You Need Men to Be Men & Women to Be Women in Relationships

Kirsten Dunst is surrounded by flowers on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar UK magazine’s May 2014 issue.

Here’s what the 31-year-old actress had to share with the mag:

On relationship roles: “I feel like the feminine has been a little undervalued. We all have to get our own jobs and make our own money, but staying at home, nurturing, being the mother, cooking—it’s a valuable thing my mom created. And sometimes, you need your knight in shining armor. I’m sorry. You need a man to be a man and a woman to be a woman. That’s why relationships work.”

On her Two Faces of January co-star Viggo Mortensen: “He’s surprisingly hilarious. The first time I met him, he was very reserved. It was in an elevator. I was like, ‘Hi.’ He was like, ‘Oh, hi.’ I learned later he was very shy. So I was nervous, even a little scared, to work with him. I thought, ‘This is going to be intense.’ Then I got the whole other side, which I don’t think many people know. He should do comedy, I’ve told him that… I’m sure he wouldn’t be happy with people knowing how fun he is.”

On wanting to direct one day: “I would love it. I love getting immersed in things and being busy all the time. It’s just that I’m not going to write my own script. I don’t think I can, I honestly don’t. It would be easier to find a book to adapt. But, I’m not interested in directing right now. Maybe in three years. Who knows? Maybe I’ll have children then. I probably will – one day – want to try it,”

God I love her.

How about we all decide for ourselves our own roles in our private life and relationships and not have to adhere to archetypes and rules created by other people. If you want to stay home, cook, etc, good for you. But if I don’t, then that’s fine too. I’m feminine because I’m a female, not because I cook for a man or have a child.

I think she could have been wiser on her words choice because people will probably misinterpret this but still love her and the shoot as well!

@Jamie: Well said!
I hate when celebrities give orders and rules to other people’s lives and relationships! they should take care of their own lives!

# 9

she’s great!

@Jamie: Word! Thank you!

@Jamie: Well said.
Relationships work when the two people involved love and respect each other as equals.

@Jamie: Very well said!

Dunst sounds moronic in this interview. Never liked her anyway even when she was relevant.

Seriously? What year is it?!
What an out dated statement and way of thinking. Not to mention every relationship and every person is different. What blabout same sex couples? What a stupid thing for her to say

Dumb! What about gay relationships? Hello.

Ugh, another star with this antiquated world views… what’s going on with these lady stars? If they’re happy cooking and baking for their men… have fun. But please leave the rest of us alone.
And I actually really liked Kiki… so please stop with this nonsense. I’m really not interested.

as long as you both (whatever relationship, gay, straight, etc) treat each other like equals and know how to communicate and compromise, gender roles don’t matter at all, you choose your own responsibilities that you are willing to maintain in the relationship, has nothing to do with gender. another narrowly stupid comment from Drunkst.

Ugh, I hate it when young (well Kiki you’re not so young anymore) women start spouting this 1950s style garbage…. stand on the shoulders of great women who fought so hard to get us basic rights – like good pay, voting, athletics, all of that – and then turn around and say drivel like this. I bet she’s the bossiest thing in the room at her house. Don’t listen to her ladies!

I completely see what she is saying. I know a lot of people are offended because you see it as anti-feminist, but I feel like most of the recent attacks have been by “feminists” on anyone saying remotely anything about women being just homemakers. How about both sides let the other think the way they think? Because it seems like there’s a push for a one-sided, black and white point of view that women should not just stay home and take care of their kids. And that it is “wrong” not to work and prefer to just take care of the kids full-time.

I like her. I also admire the fact that she wasn’t worried about being political correct in HW. At home moms and wives are strong and sometimes even stronger women then those in the work places not better just not viewed as powerful or successful in this present society.

@nipsey: Aren’t you a spiteful and mean-spirited little girl.

She perpetuates the old belief that only the female gender can stay at home, care for, cook and nurture. So sad.
