Madonna Says She 'Felt Incarcerated' During Marriage to Guy Ritchie

Madonna makes her way through JFK Airport with her entourage in tow on Saturday (March 14) in New York City.

The 56-year-old superstar recently opened up about her seven-year marriage to director Guy Ritchie.

“I think when you get married you have to be willing to make a lot of compromises and that’s fair enough,” Madonna told The Sun. “I think that’s the way it goes in relationships. However, you know, I did find myself sometimes in a state of conflict. There were many times when I wanted to express myself as an artist in ways that I don’t think my ex-husband felt comfortable with…There were times when I felt incarcerated. I wasn’t really allowed to be myself. It doesn’t mean that marriage is a bad thing. But if you’re an artist you’ve got to find someone who accepts who you are and are comfortable with that.”

Wouldn’t be surprised if he felt like he was in a prison being married to her, too.

Part of marriage is a dying to your selfishness for the good of your spouse. That requires a deep love and maturity that sadly a lot of people do not have when they choose marriage. You are part of a couple as a married person and just as parenthood changes you marriage also changes you. If you are never willing to accept those changes for the good of marriage and parenthood you will not succeed at either one. Marriage is not about just happiness and sexual attraction. Marriage is about committing to your spouse through the ups and downs, challenges and changes life brings. It will test you and challenge you and will break you down and build you up. Marriage is not easy but it is worth it for all the beauty and blessings that it brings to a couple and a family.

This is coming from a 30 year veteran of matrimony who despite the hardships and challenges has no regrets and is still very much in love with her husband and proud of the children we’ve brought into our marriage.
