Celebs Are Supporting Standing Rock on Thanksgiving

Celebrities are asking their fans to remember the people of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation while celebrating Thanksgiving this year.

Thousands of people are currently peacefully protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline, which is being built to send 470,000 barrels of crude oil across four states every day. Clean water is at risk because of the pipeline and many celebs are speaking out on behalf of the Native Americans who are fighting against it.

Stars like Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Kerry Washington, and many more have taken to social media to urge fans to support Standing Rock on this holiday.

Shailene Woodley, who has been very vocal in the fight against the DAPL for some time now, went to Standing Rock on Thanksgiving to serve meals alongside other celebs like Jane Fonda.

Katy Perry

“On #Thanksgiving, a day with complex origins, I want to speak up in support of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation and their protest of the Dakota Access Pipeline.
Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with what is going on in North Dakota. While it may not be on your front pages, this is not a frightening series of events for “them”, it is frightening series of events for all of us. The pipeline in question, would carry crude oil through land sacred to indigenous peoples and put a crucial water supply at risk. We have seen the results of unintended oil spills before and they are crippling to the health of the surrounding people and environment.
To all those peacefully protesting to protect history, to protect that which is personally sacred and to protect our life sustaining water sources, we are here shoulder to shoulder with you across this country. We cannot afford to be complacent with our rights and we cannot afford to be complacent with the rights of our neighbor.
Testimonies from the protests alarm me and should alarm all of us:

Some 400 people who were held in detention during demonstrations have suffered what Mr. Kiai (UN Special Rapporteur) called “inhuman and degrading conditions.” He is concerned over both the scale of arrests and the conditions in which American citizens are being held.” Marking people with numbers and detaining them in overcrowded cages, on the bare concrete floor, without being provided with medical care, amounts to inhuman and degrading treatment,” he said. Protestors have reported facing rubber bullets, teargas, mace, compression grenades, and bean-bag rounds while voicing their concerns over the environmental impact of the pipeline and throughout their attempts to protect burial grounds and other sites that are sacred to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. – UN.org

During this holiday and beyond, let us stand in solidarity with all those who are trying to protect it. I made a donation and I hope you can too today. See the link in my bio how you can donate. Also, it’s easy to donate in πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ by texting WATER to 82623″

Orlando Bloom

This #thanksgiving we cannot stand idly by while so many stand in solidarity on the front line to protect the most essential of human needs on sacred land. USA pls text WATER to 82623 to donate whatever you can. Be on the right side of history.

Zendaya

I hope everyone is having a beautiful thanksgiving, but as we enjoy our festivities, let’s not lose sight of the history of this day and the current issues Native Americans are facing. I stand with you. #NoDAPL ✊🏽

Lupita Nyong’o

This Thanksgiving, I am grateful to learn more about the origins of the holiday: In the year 1637, 700 unarmed Native Americans of the Pequot tribe were shot and burned alive by English and Dutch mercenaries who wanted their land in Massachusetts. The next day the governor declared “A Day of Thanksgiving” to celebrate the ‘victory.’ Today, Thanksgiving is a day for families to get together to show and share gratitude. The dark history of the holiday need not overshadow the light we experience, but inform it. I hold this somber history close to me today as I spend time with the American faction of my family. When we hold these truths to the light, we ensure that history does not repeat itself.

The Original Americans are still under duress, fighting for the conservation of their land, our water, their rights in Standing Rock, North Dakota. Though I am not physically there, I stand with them and give thanks to all else who do too.
