Prince Harry Undergoes EMDR Therapy In 'The Me You Can't See'

Prince Harry is going back to the past and undergoing a bit of therapy during his new mental health series, The Me You Can’t See.

The 36-year-old Duke of Sussex undergoes EMDR, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy on screen, to show the technique that worked for him in addressing his PTSD that he suffered from during the aftermath of his mother, Princess Diana‘s death.

The moment happens during the third episode of the series, which Harry created alongside
Oprah Winfrey.

“EMDR is always something that I wanted to try and that was one of the varieties of different forms of healing or curing that I was willing to experiment with, and I never would have been open to that had I not put in the work and the therapy that I’ve done over the years,” Harry shared, and added that Diana‘s passing even turned London, the city of his birth, into a trauma center.

He also revealed that he turned to alcohol and drugs to deal with her death.

Harry then worked with psychotherapist Sanja Oakley to show viewers just what EMDR was like, and how it helped him return home.

“Happens every time,” Harry recalled of the haunting he felt going to London. “I can’t remember the first time it happened, I can just remember the feeling, anxiety, like a hollow empty feeling almost of nervousness, is it fear? Everything feels tense.”

In the process, Harry closes his eyes, crosses his arm over his chest and tapped alternately on each shoulder. The therapy helps to get him to a place of “calmness” and “strength”.

He added that he’s done this therapy for close to five years.

“How do I fix this?” Harry says of how he addressed the trauma he was going through. “It was a case of needing to go back to the past, go back to the point of trauma, deal with it, process it and then move forward.”
