Earlier this week, Alex delivered a powerful message about the COVID-19 pandemic at the start of his final week before his death.

Alex Trebek Delivers Compelling Message Ahead Of First Final 'Jeopardy!' Episode

Alex Trebek shared a moving message with the Jeopardy! audience on the first night of his final episodes.

The late host opened up about togetherness and navigating the pandemic together.

“You’ll recall that about a month ago, I asked all of you to take a moment to give thanks for all of the blessings that you enjoy in your lives,” he shared to the camera. “Now, today, a different kind of message. This is the season of giving. I know you want to be generous with your family, your friends, your loved ones.”

Alex went on, saying, “But today, I’d like you to go one step further. I’d like you to open up your hands and open up your hearts to those who are still suffering because of COVID-19.”

“People who are suffering through no fault of their own,” he adds. “We’re trying to build a gentler, kinder society and if we all pitch in — just a little bit — we’re gonna get there.”

Alex‘s final episodes are airing this week, with guest hosts taking over the week of January 11.

Earlier today, it was revealed that Alex had spent a week in the hospital just before hosting his final episodes.

Alex Trebek Was In The Hospital Just A Week Before Taping His Final Episodes

Alex Trebek‘s final episodes of Jeopardy! are airing this week and producer Mike Richards has opened up about what fans can expect, and what they did see behind the scenes.

The longtime producer spoke to Today ahead of the first episode airing tonight, and revealed that Alex, who passed away at age 80 from his battle with pancreatic cancer in November, was actually in the hospital just a week before hosting the final episodes.

“The week before we taped those episodes, he was in the hospital,” he shared. “This man was unbelievable. He calls me and he said, ‘Mike, I’m going to be fine. I’ll be in to tape. I was able to eat Jello today.’”

He continued, remembering telling Alex that that was great “‘but that doesn’t mean you’re going to be ready to host five episodes of a game show,’ which is an enormous amount of effort, and he said, ‘Do not cancel. I will be there.’”

Days after the episodes, Alex unfortunately passed away.

Mike did reveal that fans will see Alex‘s final speech to the audience on Monday (January 4).

“What he did on tonight’s show is just a great testament to him. He comes out. He usually said something about what was happening in the news or about what game play had been happening. And in this very special, unbelievable final week, he comes out and gives a talk about the importance of togetherness and sticking together and that the world is struggling, but we have to get through it together,” Mike says.

“Usually in his monologue, he would come out, give a statement and then go to the categories,” the executive producer described. “We all burst into applause. And you don’t see it on camera, but as he’s going to the categories, he sees us start to applaud and he kind of looks at us like, what are you guys doing? And, we were so moved that we had to applaud.”

If you didn’t see, the first guest host following Alex‘s final episodes, Ken Jennings, has explained his past insensitive tweets.

Alex Trebek Did Something Incredibly Thoughtful Before His Death

Alex Trebek‘s legacy lives on.

The Jeopardy host, who sadly died after a long battle with cancer at the age of 80 earlier in November, donated 62 acres of land in the Hollywood Hills to the city of Los Angeles years ago in 1998, People reported.

The Trebek Open Space runs into Runyon Canyon Park. It is described by the Mountains Recreation & Conservation authority as “a sunny, well-established network of fire roads, providing “trails for hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians.”

The Laurel Canyon Land Trust reminded fans of the park with a tribute on Facebook following the sad news of his death.

“Today Alex Trebek passed away. Did you know that he was generous conservationist in addition to being a famous game show host? He donated 62 acres of land in the Santa Monica Mountains in Nichols Canyon to create the Trebek Open Space,” they wrote.

“This was not only a gift to urban Angelinos who thirst for open space and outdoor activity, but a gift to native animals such as our local Mountain Lions that require large amounts of open space in order to survive, and a gift to future generations who will have to reckon with climate change in the years to come. Thank you Alex Trebek and may you Rest in Peace.”

Ryan Reynolds recently recalled his last conversation with the late host.
