“I love the idea of a traditional kind of workplace ensemble comedy set in the high stakes world of national security and cyberterrorism,” he explained of the show’s concept.

He also confirmed that the Friends reunion special is still in the works, and spoke about the latest status of the production.

“We have a lot of the creative aspects of the show kind of worked out. It’s unscripted, but there are going to be some surprise funny bits. The real question is, ‘when?’ We’re still trying to figure that out because we want to do it when it’s safe to do so for everyone,” he explained.

David Schwimmer Weighs In on Rachel & Ross' Were They On a Break Debate

David Schwimmer is finally weighing in on the famous question – were Ross and Rachel really on a break!?

You may recall that famous Friends episode where Rachel told Ross she wanted to take a break from their relationship. Ross then went and slept with another woman.

“People are so passionately divided about whether or not they were on a break,” David told Jimmy Fallon during an appearance on The Tonight Show.

Jimmy then asked what side of the debate he was on, he responded, “Yeah, it’s not even a question, they were on a break.”

He then revealed an update on the Friends reunion. “The hope is that this reunion special, which we would love to shoot, it’s unscripted, it’s basically a fun interview and then some other surprise bits,” he shared. “But it’s supposed to happen in August, the middle of August.”

David also recently addressed the lack of diversity on Friends.

David Schwimmer Addresses Lack of Diversity on 'Friends'

David Schwimmer is addressing Friends‘ lack of diversity issue.

The 53-year-old actor, who played Ross, said that he pushed for his character to date women of color during the show.

“I just thought, I really felt like Ross should date other people, women of all races,” David shared with Entertainment Tonight. “It felt wrong that there was not enough representation on the show.”

On Friends, Ross dated two women of color – Julie, played by Lauren Tom, and Charlie, played by Aisha Tyler.

However, David is pleased at how Friends portrayed a gay relationship at the time when back in ’90s they weren’t often shown on TV.

“[Friends] was doing some incredible things,” David said. “If you remember the pilot, my character was losing his wife to a woman. The way they portrayed gay marriage on the show and how we as a family made it work, I thought was great.”

If you missed it, the Friends creator recently reflected on her past mistakes of not being diverse enough on the show.

The 9-year-old daughter of the Friends star and his ex, Zoe Buckman, debuted her new look on her mom’s Instagram over the weekend.

“The world is saying ‘burn it down and rebuild’ and the babies are listening. I see how kids today challenge norms and standards in a way that we didn’t, and that, amongst other things, gives me hope! One ❤️x,” Zoe captioned the slideshow of pics, which shows her shaving off Cleo‘s brown locks.

David recently spoke about discussing body autonomy with Cleo in a 2018 interview with Today.

“With my daughter, it’s more about just knowing it’s your body and your space. It’s more about personal space and building confidence in her to speak out and speak up if anything she encounters makes her feel uncomfortable, period,” David shared. “Her body, her hair, it’s hers. She owns it. It’s giving her the courage and confidence to speak up and speak out.”

David and Zoe split up in 2017 after getting married in 2010.

Here's When 'Friends' Reunion Might Air on HBO Max

The Friends reunion was postponed indefinitely when the Coronavirus pandemic hit America, and the stars of the show – Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer – were unable to come together to tape the special as planned.

HBO Max is launching on May 27 and the Friends reunion was supposed to air at that time.

Now, Friends producer and director Kevin Bright went on Maria Menounos’ daytime show Better Together and revealed when the special may air.

“We’re just waiting. We’re waiting for a window. We feel the reunion needs to be done in front of an audience. We can’t not share it after all this time. So, uh, tentatively speaking, we’re hoping that the special will be completed by Thanksgiving. And, uh, that the show will be seen on HBOMax at that time,” Kevin said.

'Friends' Reunion Special Could Tape at End of Summer

The Friends reunion special, which was delayed indefinitely due to the Coronavirus pandemic, could film at the end of the summer, WarnerMedia Entertainment and Direct-to-Consumer chairman Bob Greenblatt said.

The reunion was supposed to be available on HBO Max on May 27, when the streaming service plans to launch.

“At first we thought, shows will be delayed for a month or two at the most, and now it seems like it’s going to be far longer than that,” Greenblatt said (via Variety). “We’re holding out for being able to get this special done hopefully by the end of the summer, if the stars align and hopefully we can get back into production. We do think there’s a value to having a big, raucous live audience to experience these six great friends coming back together and we didn’t want to just suddenly do it on a web call with, you know, six squares and people shooting from their kitchens and bedrooms.”

He added that if stay-at-home orders continue much longer, they could explore a virtual route.

“But at the moment, we’re trying to look to the future and get this thing done in a more conventional way, and I think it’s worth waiting for,” he added. “We would have loved to have had it on [HBO Max on] Day One, but at the same time, if we can get it launched in the fall, I think it’ll be something that we can have the audience really looking forward to as well.”

Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer are all set to return for the event!
